Taylor Adair scored a hat trick, but the Pacific women's water polo team fell in the season opener Saturday morning at Cal, 12-4.
Pacific falls to 0-1 on the season, while Cal improves to 1-0.
Adair opened the scoring 56 seconds into the match, giving Pacific the early 1-0 lead. But Cal's Ashley Young quickly answered on the ensuing possession. Gracie Smith added goal with 1:04 left in the quarter as the Tigers took the lead again, 2-1.
Young responded for the Bears, tying the game early in the second quarter, the first of four-straight Cal goals. Stephanie Mutafyan gave the Bears the lead, and Tiera Schroeder added a goal at the 4:20 mark before Dora Antal provided a 5-2 lead.
Adair picked up her second goal as the Tigers pulled within two before halftime, 5-3.
In the third quarter, Antal tallied her second goal of the game with 5:39 left in the third to restore a three-goal lead, and start a stretch of five-straight Bears goals. Pippa Saunders found the back of the net and then Antal completed the hat trick on a 6-on-5 for a 8-3 California advantage.
Chris Baker and Brooke Vowell each scored for Cal to stretch the lead to 10-3 at the end of the third quarter.
After Anna Illes and Molly Quinn scored for Cal in the fourth, Adair completed the hat trick with 3:42 to go.
The Tigers take on Stanford at 1:30 p.m. in the afternoon session of the California Speedo Cup in a game that will be listed as a scrimmage and count only for tournament purposes.
