Berkeley, Calif. – The Pacific field hockey team defeated California 4-2 in a game televised to a national audience on the Pac-12 network on Sunday, Sept. 29.
"This win for us is a major step in the building process that started six months ago," said Head Coach Andy Smith. "I'm so proud of every single person on my squad today."
After playing a tightly contested game on Friday that was won by Cal in penalty strokes, the teams again played an even game just two days later. The Tigers fell behind on a goal by 1-0 at 19:41 in the first half. Pacific evened it up at 1-1 on a goal by senior Emily Tregoning just two minutes later. Senior Paige Counsman gave Pacific a 2-1 lead with :18 seconds left in the half. Cal outshot the Tigers 8-6 in the first half and had a 4-1 edge in penalty corners.
The Tigers went up 3-1 after a goal by freshman Nicole Laskosky to the right side of the cage after a great pass from Tregoning at 45:45. At 49:44 remaining, Cal was awarded a penalty stroke, but Tiger goalkeeper Molly Macierz saved it off of her left side. The Tigers added another goal to take a 4-1 lead at 57:46 after a goal by Sidney Brooks from assist by Counsman. It was Brooks' first career goal. The Bears added a goal by Jamie Stankiewicz at 58:41 to make the final 4-2.
Cal outshot the Tigers 14-10 for the game and had a 6-3 edge in penalty corners. Macierz ended up with five saves.
Pacific improves to 3-7 overall and 1-0 in the NorPac while California falls to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the NorPac.
The Tigers are next in action on Friday, Oct. 4 at Stanford. The game begins at 6:00 p.m.
