WWP Falls In Close Game At San Diego State

San Diego, Calif. – The No. 20 Pacific women's water polo team saw their halftime lead evaporate as eighth-ranked San Diego State came from behind to win, 8-6, in a Big West match at the Aztec Aquaplex Saturday.

Sophomore Taylor Adair and freshman Gracie Smith each scored a pair of goals for Pacific (16-12, 1-5 BWC). Junior Elise Martin and sophomore Kelsey Carter also scored for the Tigers.

The two squads traded goals in the opening moments of the game as Smith gave the Tigers an early lead on a back-hand goal from set before San Diego State (21-9, 5-2 BWC) tied it on its next possession as Amber Pezzolla's shot deflected in off the outstretched arm of junior Michele Relton. Adair would find the back of the cage at the 5:38 mark, and after the Aztecs answered one minute later, Smith gave Pacific a 3-2 lead with another back-hand goal.

SDSU made a run to open the second quarter, notching three consecutive goals to take a 5-3 advantage with 3:15 left in the frame. The Tigers refused to back down, however, as Carter scored a bar-in skip shot before Martin tied the game at 5-5 at the 1:58 mark. Adair's second goal with one minute left gave Pacific a 6-5 lead heading into intermission.

Pezzolla tied the game on her third score early in the third quarter before the Aztecs took the lead for good with 7:11 on the clock. SDSU would score again at the 6:46 mark in what would be the match's final goal as neither team scored the rest of the way.

Pezzolla led all scorers with three goals. Goalkeeper Rachel Mitchell blocked six saves in a complete-game effort.

Pacific wraps up its regular season next Saturday, April 20, with a road game at conference rival UC Davis. The action is set to begin at noon.
