Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific baseball team was the victim of a four-run fourth inning as the No. 22 Cal Golden Bears took game two of a three-game series Saturday at Klein Family Field, 6-3 on February 18.

Senior RF Allen Riley posted a two-for-four afternoon, with an RBI and a run scored, while senior SS Josh Simms went two-for-four. Sophomore 2B Curtis Gomez was one-for-three with a triple and a run scored, while sophomore C Jason Taasaas drove in a run on a single in three trips to the plate.

Pacific fell to 0-2 on the season, while No. 22 Cal improved to 2-0.

Cal RHP Matt Flemer (1-0) went eight innings, allowing three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Pacific freshman Mike Hager (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing four earned on seven hits while striking out two in five innings of work.

Pacific redshirt senior Thomas Berolzheimer tossed 1.2 innings in his return to the hill after missing last season following arm surgery. He allowed one unearned run in his stint. Senior RHP Joe Spizzirri made his Pacific debut, recording an out in a third of an inning. Sophomore lefty Kyle Crawford tossed two innings, allowing a run on two hits with three strikeouts.

The Tigers took the lead in the third, on a lead-off triple by Gomez, followed by an RBI groundout from senior LF Brett Christopher.

Cal answered in the fourth, as DH Vince Bruno led off with a single, quickly followed by 1B Andrew Knapp, who clubbed his first homer of the season to right. Following a single by CF Chad Bunting, RF Danny Oh doubled to left, and LF Darrel Matthews doubled down the right field to bring home a pair of runs.

Pacific responded with two in the bottom of the fourth, as junior 3B Dustin Torchio doubled to left to open the frame, and Riley drove him in with a single up the middle. Following a groundout to move the runner, Taasaas singled to pull Pacific within 4-3. Junior DH Tyger Pederson singled to right, but Taasaas was gunned down at third and the Tigers' rally stalled.

Bruno opened the seventh for Cal with a single off the foot of Crawford, who's errant throw to the bag allowed Bruno to move up a base. After a deep fly advanced Bruno to third, Bunting singled to right for a 5-3 Cal lead.

In the ninth, C Chadd Krist doubled and moved to third on a flyout. Bunting's poke towards first found its way through the infield to plate the final run.

Cal RHP Logan Scott allowed a single to Riley in the ninth before recording the save.

Pacific and Cal will wrap the three game series back in Berkeley on Sunday, February 19 at 1 p.m.
