Cal Poly Spoils Pacific's Senior Day

Box Score

STOCKTON, Calif. - Cal Poly took game three of the series at Pacific Sunday afternoon, 21-0, behind six home runs as Mustangs' RHP Joey Wagman allowed two hits in seven innings. Seniors Matt Carvutto and Brian Martin each finished the day one-for-four for Pacific.

Wagman retired the first 11 Tigers until Carvutto, a senior OF/RHP from Poway, Calif., picked up a single to center in the fourth. Martin, the Tigers' senior 1B from Livermore, Calif., followed with a single through the right side, but Wagman escaped with the shutout intact.

Cal Poly opened the game with a run in the first on a double from CF Bobby Crocker, a sacrifice and an RBI groundout from DH D.J. Gentile. The Mustangs added three in the third on a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly from SS Mike Miller. Third baseman Dustin Torchio(Santa Cruz, Calif.) made a spectacular stop on a hot shot down the third base line, diving behind the bag and adjusting on a bad hop to glove the smash off the bat of Gentile, but his throw to first was low, allowing the second runner to score on the play.

The Mustangs added three more in the fourth on a two-run double from 2B Evan Busby and an RBI single from Miller.

Tigers starter senior RHP Jake Hummel (Peoria, Ariz.) departed after five innings, allowing six earned on 10 hits with one strikeout. He falls to 4-5 on the season.

Cal Poly picked up a solo run in the sixth off sophomore RHP John Haberman (Stockton, Calif.). With runners on first and second, the runners broke on a wild pitch, and an errant throw down to second base allowed eighth run of the ballgame to score.

The Mustangs put the game out of reach in the seventh, as they sent 10 men to the plate and hit four home runs in the inning. PH Jordan Hadlock, LF Jimmy Allen and Crocker hit three straight home runs. Following a hit by pitch and a single, Carvutto threw out a runner on at second on a would-be single, but PH Michael Hoo and RF Mitch Haniger followed with RBI singles and PH Tim Wise added a two-run home run before freshman LHP Kyle Crawford (Modesto, Calif.), on in relief of freshman RHP Peter Miller (Santa Cruz, Calif.), struck out Hadlock to end the inning.

Crocker added a solo shot in the eighth and admired his second home run of the game and fifth of the season, while Wise hit a three-run homer in the ninth, his second of the game. Crocker finished the ballgame five-for-six with two runs batted in, while Wise posted six RBI in two at bats.

Sophomore 2B Tyger Pederson (Palo Alto, Calif.) added a single in the ninth, but Cal Poly RHP Chase Johnson struck out three to end the ballgame.

The Tigers honored seniors Matt Carvutto, Aaron Hassel, Jake Hummel, Brian Martin, Marcus Pointer and Robbie Richardson prior to the contest.

Pacific falls to 16-34 on the year, 8-13 in the Big West, while Cal Poly improves to 26-23 overall, 15-9 in the Big West.

The Tigers will host Cal on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in their final home game of the year before wrapping the season with a three-game series at UC Santa Barbara beginning Friday.
