Richardson, Prato Matthews Pitch Tigers to 6-1 Win Over Cal Poly

STOCKTON, Calif. - Matt Carvutto and Josh Simms hit their first home runs of the season andRobbie Richardson and John Prato Matthews combined to hold Cal Poly to one run over nine innings as the Pacific baseball team rolled to a win over Cal Poly, 6-1, Friday at Klein Family Field.

Richardson (Lodi, Calif.), making his first start of the year, allowed just four hits and one run over five innings to improve to 2-2 on the season. Prato Matthews (Davis, Calif.) entered in the sixth and tossed four shutout innings allowing just one hit to earn his first save of the year.

Carvutto, a senior left field from Poway, Calif. went three-for-five at the plate with a home run, a double and two runs batted in. Senior 1B Brian Martin (Livermore, Calif.) reached base four times with a three-for-three day at the dish, with a run batted in and a walk. Simms, a junior shortstop from La Mesa, Calif., finished the night two-for-four with two runs batted in.

In the bottom of the first, Carvutto drilled the first pitch of his at bat from Cal Poly starter RHP Mason Radeke over the left field wall. It was the first homer of the season for Carvutto, who entered the game with 19 extra base hits including a Big West-leading 18 doubles on the year.

The Tigers tacked on two more in the second, as freshman C Jason Taasaas (Elk Grove, Calif.) was hit by pitch and advanced to second on a single by Simms. Following a fielder's choice to erase Simms, sophomore 3B Dustin Torchio(Santa Cruz, Calif.) singled to left to bring home Taasaas with two outs, and Carvutto then added an RBI single to left. 

Cal Poly broke through in the third, as LF Jimmy Allen doubled with one out and after Richardson got a fly out off the bat of 2B Denver Chavez, SS Mike Miller poked a single to left to break the shutout.

Pacific picked up a run in the fourth as Carvutto doubled to left center with two out on the ninth pitch of his at bat. Martin stroked the first pitch of his at bat to left field to give Pacific a 4-1 lead.

In the fifth, Taasaas walked with two men away and Simms followed with a home run on the first pitch, taking Radeke over the wall down the left field line. Radeke (8-3) had allowed one home run in 87.2 innings entering the ball game before Carvutto and Simms took him deep in the ballgame. He lasted five innings, allowing all six runs on nine hits while walking four and striking out three. Richardson, who's longest previous outing was three and two-thirds on May 10 at San Jose State, finished the fifth and turned things over to Prato Matthews, who allowed just a single to Allen in the seventh.

The Tigers win was their first in the opening of a three-game series this season as Pacific improves to 8-11 in the Big West, 16-32 overall. Cal Poly, which entered the day third in the Big West, falls to 13-9 in conference and 24-23 overall.

Pacific will send senior RHP Marcus Pointer (Pacifica, Calif.), who has a 3-1 record and 3.35 ERA in his last seven starts, to the mound on Saturday in a 6 p.m. start in game two. Cal Poly will counter with RHP Steven Fischback (6-2, 3.45 ERA).
