BELLEVUE, Wash. - The Pacific baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision to Seattle University Friday at Bannerwood Park. Senior 1B Brian Martin (Livermore, Calif.) hit his fourth home run of the season, but the Redhawks rallied for two runs in the bottom of the eighth to top the Tigers.
Senior LF Matt Carvutto (Poway, Calif.) posted a two-for-four day with an RBI and a pair of runs scored, while junior RF Allen Riley (Fresno, Calif.) added a one-for-four day with an RBI. Martin, who finished one-for-four, tied for the Tigers team lead in home runs with his fourth.
Pacific led 3-0 after the top of the first as 3B Dustin Torchio (Santa Cruz, Calif.) walked with one out, and scored from first on a double by Carvutto. Carvutto ripped a line drive the other way into the right center-field gap for his Big West leading 18th double of the year. Martin followed with a long drive down the right field line, over the wall for his fourth round-tripper of the season.
Tigers' junior RHP John Prato Matthews (Davis, Calif.) didn't allow a hit until the third, when CF Bryndon Ecklund laid down a bunt down the third base line. After a walk and a sacrifice, LF Doug Kincaid plated the first run with an RBI groundout. RF Josh Kalalau followed with a double down the left field line to pull Seattle within one at 3-2.
Matthews worked into the sixth, but departed allowing a solo home run to 3B Cullen Hendrickson to tie the game at 3-3. Matthews allowed three earned runs on four hits in 5.0 innings, while striking out four. Junior RHP Jared Wagner (Danville, Calif.) finished the sixth and tossed a scoreless seventh.
The Tigers surged ahead in the eight as Carvutto singled to right, stole second base and advanced to third as the throw down sailed into center field. Riley followed with a single to the right- center field gap to plate Carvutto and put Pacific up 4-3.
Wagner opened the eighth by hitting Hendrickson, and after Nick Latta singled through the left side, gave way to junior RHP Chris Larsen (Moline, Ill.). As PH Marcelino Morales tried a sacrifice bunt, Larsen's pitch down and in tapped his foot for a hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Ecklund followed with a slow roller towards second, on which the Tigers had no play other than first base as the tying run came in to score. Pacific intentionally walked 2B Trent Oleszczuk to load the bases, but a pitch to C Michael Tevlin skipped to the backstop allowing the go-ahead run to score. Larsen got out of the inning by striking out Tevlin and getting a fly out from Kalalau.
In the bottom of the ninth, junior SS Josh Simms (La Mesa, Calif.) reached with a two-out single and stole second base, but a bid by sophomore 2B Tyger Pederson (Palo Alto, Calif.) to bring home Simms was snared inches off the turf by Hendrickson to end the ballgame.
Wagner (0-4) took the loss, allowing two earned in two-plus innings.
Seattle starter RHP Brandon Kizer went 7.2 innings, allowed four earned on six hits with eight strike outs, but picked up the no decision. RHP Blaine Jones (2-1) earned the win, tossing the final 1.1 innings with one hit allowed and a strikeout.
The Tigers fall to 15-30 on the season, while the Redhawks improve to 19-25-1. Pacific and Seattle will meet in game two of the three-game series on Saturday at 7 p.m.
