Santa Barbara, Calif. - Looking to avenge a 9-5
loss during regular season action in what would be the senior
class' final game of their careers at Pacific, the unit tallied a
combined five goals, nine steals and four field blocks to lead the
Tigers to a 6-4 win over No. 14 UC Santa Barbara. With the win the
Tigers improved to 21-12 (2-3 Big West) on the season while the
Gauchos fell to 16-13 (3-2 Big West) on the year.
The Tigers wasted little time to jump out in front of the
Gauchos in the first frame. Senior Bethany
Quertermous and freshman Elise Martin notched
back-to-back goals at the 4:09 and 3:14 spots respectively to put
the Tigers up by two, but UCSB's Claire Buchanan made it a one goal
contest on the counter attack at the 2:49 mark. Senior Mandy King came back
with a goal of her own 14 seconds later to help the Tigers reclaim
the two point command.
With the 3-1 lead at the start of the second quarter, Pacific's
defense shutdown the Gaucho offense during the final eight minutes
of regulation in the first half. The Tigers increased their lead to
three behind goals from Quertermous and senior Siobhan Larsen in
the closing minutes of the quarter giving Pacific the 5-1 lead.
During the third quarter Pacific's 3-0 run came to an end at the
5:30 mark as UCSB notched its second goal of the day from Kilee
Dreyer, cutting the Tiger lead to three. Looking to put Pacific
back up by four, King found the back of the net for a second time
with 2:53 left on the clock to end the third period of play.
Entering the final frame trailing Pacific 6-2, the Gauchos held
the Tigers scoreless for the first time during the contest while
scoring a pair of goals at the 7:14 and 2:08 spots. However UCSB's
last quarter surge came up short as the Gauchos were unable to
overcome Pacific's lead and fell 6-4 to the Tigers.
Individually the Tigers were led by seniors Bethany
Quertermous and Mandy King who scored a
pair of goals each while senior Siobhan Larsen and
freshman Elise
Martin found the back of the net once. Defensively freshman Michele Relton
recorded seven saves in the cage.
With the 6-4 win over UCSB, Pacific finished fifth at the 2011
Big West Women's Water Polo tournament. Additionally for the second
consecutive season Pacific recorded a 20 win season while under
head coach Megan
Thomson's tenure.
