No. 17 Cal State Northridge Comes Back In Second Half To Defeat No. 18 Pacific, 11-9

Northridge, Calif. - With a three point advantage heading into the third frame, Pacific's women's water polo team suffered a 11-9 loss after gave up seven goals to Cal State Northridge (CSUN) in the second half. With the loss the Tigers fell to 16-10 (0-2 Big West) on the year while the Matadors improved to 18-11 (2-0 Big West).

The Tigers wasted no time finding the back of net in the first frame. Seniors Bethany Quertermous and Allison King tallied back-to-back goals at the 6:12 and 4:34 spots respectively to put the Tigers up 2-0. CSUN's Melissa Doll countered at the 1:28 mark with a goal to reduce Pacific's lead to one to make it a 2-1 contest at the end of the frame.

At the second quarter the Matadors tied the game at two goals apiece when Heidi Pettinger found the back of the net 30 seconds into the frame. However the Tigers regained the lead with a trio of goals, which included a pair of goals from senior Mandy King at the 7:19 and 6:31 points and a goal from Quertermous at the 5:31 spot. Leah Jannke of CSUN made it a 5-3 game when the tallied a goal with 2:52 remaining on the clock, but Pacific regained the three point advantage with :55 remaining in regulation on a goal from freshman Malena Prlain. The Matadors closed out the half tallying a goal at he :13 spot for a 6-4 game heading into the half.

Trailing by a pair of goals at the start of the third quarter, the Matadors scored four unanswered goals from the 7:33 to 1:30 spots to take the 8-6 lead. Quertermous responded with her third goal of the contest to put the Tigers within one of CSUN, but the Matadors tallied two additional goals at the :53 and :05 spots to make it a 10-7 contest.

Down for the first time in the contest, the Tiger offense rallied at the start of the fourth frame tallying two goals to put Pacific within one of the Matadors with a little under five minutes remaining in regulation. Quertermous and Mandy King had scored the two goals for the Tigers at the 6:44 and 4:55 points correspondingly, but with 3:19 left on the clock CSUN's Lindsy Nelson scored the Matador's eleventh goal on the day which resulted in an 11-9 final score.

Individually the Tigers were led by Bethany Quertermous who scored four goals while Mandy King completed the hat trick in the loss. Also finding the back of the net for Pacific was Allison King and Malena Prlain who scored one goal apiece. Freshman Michele Relton recorded 10 saves in the cage for the Tigers.

The Tigers continue Big West action on Saturday, April 9-10, when they host Long Beach State and UC Irvine at Chris Kjeldsen Pool. Both games are scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
