No. 18 Pacific Falls To No. 14 UC Santa Barbara, 9-5

Santa Barbara, Calif. – After giving up four goals in the first quarter, Pacific's women's water polo team dropped a 9-5 decision to No. 14 UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) in the first weekend of Big West (BW) action. With the loss the Tigers fell to 16-9 (0-1 BW) on the year while the Gauchos improved to 18-8 (1-0 BW).

In the first frame the Gauchos took the 1-0 lead less than two minutes into regulation but senior Dara Tawarahara (Honolulu, Hawaii) countered at the 4:03 spot to tie the game at 1-1. UCSB closed out the final minutes of the quarter tallying three additional goals to take the three point advantage heading into the second quarter.

During the second quarter Pacific's defense limited the Gauchos to one goal, however the Tigers trailed UCSB 5-1 entering the half as the offense was held scoreless during the quarter.

The Tigers kicked off the third frame with a goal from senior Bethany Quertermous (Humble, Texas) at the 6:29 mark to reduce UCSB's lead to three. UCSB then responded with a trio of goals at the 6:08, 5:22 and 3:05 spots before Pacific's freshman Chelsea Weir (Seal Beach, Calif.) found the back of the net with 2:51 remaining on the clock to make it an 8-3 game.

In the final frame the senior duo of Quertermous and Tawarahara notched back-to-back goals at the 5:42 and 2:32 spots to put the Tigers within three of UCSB. With 2:11 remaining in regulation UCSB tallied its final goal to extend the lead to four. The Tigers were unable to overcome the Gaucho lead in the final minutes, ultimately falling 9-5 to UCSB.

Individually the Tigers were led by seniors Bethany Quertermous (Humble, Texas) and Dara Tawarahara (Honolulu, Hawaii) who scored two goals apiece. Freshman Chelsea Weir (Seal Beach, Calif.) found the back of the net once while Michele Relton (Beaconsfield, QC, Canada) recorded 11 saves in the cage for the Tigers.

Pacific continues Big West action on Sunday, April 3, with a 12 pm contest at No. 17 Cal State Northridge.
