Davis, Calif. - Led by a four goal performance from senior Dara Tawarahara, Pacific's women's water polo team defeated No. 15 UC Davis, 6-5. With the win the Tigers improved to 18-11 (2-3 Big West) on the season while the Aggies fell to 17-11 (1-4 Big West) on the year.
The first period of the game proved to be a tough battle as both teams ended the first frame of regulation in a 1-1 tie. UC Davis took the 1-0 lead at the 5:48 mark on a goal from Carmen Eggert, however freshman Elise Martin countered with 3:56 left on the clock with her lone goal of the day.
In the second frame senior Dara Tawarahara scored her first of three goals in the frame to put Pacific up 2-1 at the 5:39 spot. Even though the Aggies were able to tie the game at two all with a goal at the 3:35 mark, the Tiger defense stepped up in the final minutes period to prevent the UCD from scoring another goal during the half. The Tigers closed out the frame expanding their lead to two with a pair of goals from Tawarahara at the 1:28 and :48 spots.
During the third quarter the Aggies seemed to find some offensive momentum when they tied the game at 4-4 on back-to-back goals at the 7:06 and 2:01 spots from Alicia Began and a converted five-meter from Jessica Dunn. But senior Bethany Quertermous quickly put the Tigers back in control of the game when she scored on a skip shot with 1:24 remaining on the clock to give Pacific the one point advantage.
With 6:38 left in the game, Tawarahara notched her fourth goal of the contest to put Pacific up by two. The Aggies closed out the game tallying their fifth goal of the contest at the 4:15 mark for a 6-5 final score.
Pacific was led by senior Dara Tawarahara who scored four goals while senior Bethany Quertermous and freshman Elise Martin scored one goal apiece. Freshman Michele Relton registered 10 saves in the cage for Pacific. With 10 blocks in the game, Relton brought her single season saves total to 299 on the year which puts her atop Pacific's all-time single season saves list.
The Tigers return to Chris Kjeldsen Pool on Saturday, April 23 for a pair of games against Sonoma State and Cal State Monterey Bay. On this day Pacific will honor seniors Mandy King, Allison King, Bethany Quertermous, Dara Tawarahara, Siobhan Larsen, Meara McCarthy, Kailee Bucknum and Melissa Loper who will be competing in their final home games at Pacific.
