STOCKTON, Calif. - Pacific's Dustin Torchio and Aaron Hassel turned in two-for-four performances, but UC Irvine's Matt Summers tossed seven innings of shutout ball and Drew Hillman drove in four with a three-run home run as the No. 17 Anteaters took game one from the Tigers, 10-0, Friday night at Klein Family Field.
UC Irvine (22-8 overall, 5-2 Big West), ranked No. 17 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25, picked up single runs in each of the first five innings. The Anteaters opened with an unearned run in the first as RF Sean Madigan struck out swinging on a wild pitch and was safe at second when the throw down to first went awry. After a single by 3B Brian Hernandez set up first and third with one out, Tigers sophomore RHP Brent McMinn (Houston, Texas) got the ground ball he needed to get out of the inning, but after getting the force out at second base, the relay throw skipped into the Tigers' dugout allowing Madigan to score.
Junior RF Allen Riley (Fresno, Calif.) doubled with one out in the first, and after a groundout and an intentional walk to CF Matt Carvutto (Poway, Calif.) was stranded at third on a groundout to end the inning.
In the second, after LF Drew Hillman was hit by pitch, 2B Tommy Reyes doubled down the right field line to put UC Irvine up 2-0. The Anteaters tacked on another in the third on a walk, a single by CF Christian Ramirez, and a sacrifice fly from C Ronnie Shaeffer. In the fourth, DH Jonathan Hurst posted a solo home run to left for a 4-0 lead, and UCI added a run in the fifth on a walk, a single by Shaeffer and a RBI groundout from Hillman.
McMinn, went five innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts, taking the loss to fall to 1-1.
Pacific challenged in their half of the fifth as Hassel, the junior catcher from Tarzana, Calif., singled to right to open the inning and junior SS Josh Simms (La Mesa, Calif.) singled through the left side. But Summers retired the next three Tigers to leave a pair of base and take a 5-0 lead into the sixth.
Redshirt freshman LHP Andrew Wild (Visalia, Calif.) and freshman RHP Peter Miller (Santa Cruz, Calif.) combined to toss a scoreless sixth for Pacific. Carvutto and Torchio, the sophomore 3B from Santa Cruz, Calif., opened the bottom of the frame with a pair of singles. But once again, Summers set down the next three Tigers in order.
UC Irvine added on in the seventh off Miller, as Hillman walked and stole second base, and came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Reyes.
In the eighth, the Anteaters picked up a walk and a single by Hernandez to open the inning off freshman LHP Kyle Crawford (Modesto, Calif.). Ramirez then drove home Madigan with a single, and after sophomore RHP Jonas Noack (San Diego, Calif) replaced Crawford, Jordan Leyland walked and Hillman added a three-run home run to left to provide the final 10-0 margin.
Junior Jacob Sylvester (Livermore, Calif.) tossed a one-two-three ninth inning for Pacific, his second scoreless inning in two appearances on the mound for the Tigers.
Summers improves to 5-2 with the victory as he allowed six hits while striking out seven.
The series continues Saturday at 6 p.m. with RHP Marcus Pointer (Pacifica, Calif.) facing the Anteaters' freshman RHP Andrew Thurman.
