No. 19 Pacific Falls To No. 10 UC Irvine, 11-6

Stockton, Calif. –In the second Big West conference game of the weekend, Pacific's women's water polo team dropped an 11-6 decision to No. 10 UC Irvine (UCI). With the loss the Tigers fell to 17-11 (1-3 Big West) while the Anteaters improved to 16-8 (2-0 Big West).

UCI kicked off the first frame with a pair of goals at the 7:05 and 5:34 spots from Caitlin Haskell and Danielle Warde respectively to take the 2-0 lead. Senior Mandy King responded with the Tigers' first goal of the game when she found the back of the net with 1:59 remaining on the clock to put the Pacific within one of the Anteaters, making it a 2-1 contest.

In the second period of play Pacific was held scoreless while UCI's Jessy Cardey tallied three goals in a four minute span to expand the Anteater lead to four. UCI went on to record two additional goals to make it a 7-1 game heading into the half.

At the start of the third quarter the Anteaters tallied their eighth goal of game at the 7:02 spot. However the Tigers countered with a pair of goals from seniors Bethany Quertermous and Dara Tawarahara at the 5:09 and 2:42 points respectively to make it an 8-3 contest.

The Tigers continued their scoring attack to start the fourth with a goal 31 seconds into the frame from Tawarahara to put the Tigers within four of the Anteaters. However UCI regained the five point advantage when Danielle Warde converted five-meter penalty shot at the 6:47 point, but Quertermous responded with her second goal of the day at the 3:31 spot for a 9-5 score. The Anteaters expanded their lead to six with consecutive goals with less than two minutes left to play. Pacific ended the game with a goal from senior Allie King with 35 seconds remaining to play for an 11-6 final score.

Pacific was paced by seniors Dara Tawarahara and Bethany Quertermous who scored two goals apiece, while Allison King and Mandy King found the back of the net once. Freshman Michele Relton recorded nine saves in the cage for the Tigers.

Pacific continues action on Saturday, April 16 in Davis, Calif., at 12 pm.
