No. 15 Pacific fell to No. 7 UC Irvine in straight sets (25-23, 25-23, 25-16) at the Bren Events Center Saturday.
The Anteaters now 11-9, (8-6 MPSF) hit .453 (53 kills with 10 errors on 95 swings) for the match and out-dug the Tigers 37-25.
Pacific 7-12, (3-10MPSF) hit .326 (38 kills and nine errors on 89 swings) and matched UCI with 6.5 blocks apiece.
Junior Florian Gornik (Schwechat, Austria) led Pacific with 13 kills followed by redshirt sophomore Taylor Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) with 10 kills. Freshman Javier Caceres (Guaynabo, Puerto Ric0) handled the passing and led the Tigers with seven digs.
Pacific took an 18-16 lead in the first set on a kill by Hughes and a block by redshirt junior Chaz Hindsley (Northfield, Ill.) and Hughes. A UCI Carson Clark kill was followed by a Tiger attack error to tie the set at 18 all. Another kill by Clark plus a block by Cory Yoder and Kevin Carroll gave the Anteaters set point, 24-22. A Gornik kill kept the Tigers in the hunt until delayed Yoder put down the set winner to give the Anteaters the first frame, 25-23.
UCI led 13-7 in the second set before Pacific went on a 10-5 run to narrow the margin to 18-17. A triple block by Hughes, redshirt freshman Adam Troy and redshirt junior Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.) knotted the game at 21-21. UCI would get consecutive kills by Clark and Jordan DuFault to take the 23-21 advantage. UCI claimed the set 25-23.
The Tigers went on to hit .429 in the final frame, but it wasn't enough to keep pace with the Anteaters as they hit .652 (16-1-23) in the third set as they swept the match claiming the third frame 25-16.
Pacific is back in action in Manoa, Hawaii where they play a two game series with the University of Hawaii Friday March 11 and Saturday march 12.
