Kansas State Comes From Behind For 7-6 Win Over Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. - Kansas State rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh for a come from behind for a 7-6 win over Pacific baseball Sunday in the finale of a three-game set at Klein Family Field.

Pacific spotted starter Jake Hummel (Peoria, Ariz.) a five-run lead after three innings, but the Wildcats posted a five-run seventh off the Tigers bullpen to earn the sweep in the season-series.

Junior OF Daniel Johnston (Portola Valley, Calif.) went three-for-four at the plate with a two-run inside-the-park home run and a pair of runs batted in for the Tigers while junior OF Allen Riley (Fresno, Calif.) also added his first career home run leading off the sixth. Senior OF Matt Carvutto (Poway, Calif.) posted two hits in five at bats with a two-run triple, a double and a pair of runs scored.

Senior RHP Robbie Richardson (Lodi, Calif.) took the loss (0-1), allowing one run in 2.1 innings of work. He struck out three of the nine batters he faced, but allowed a triple and a single with two-out in the seventh during the Kansas State rally.

Wildcats' RHP Kayvn Bahramzedeh (1-0) picked up the win, allowing one earned run in 4.2 innings after taking over for starter LHP Levi Schlick after the third. Bahramzedeh struck out three, walked a pair and gave up two hits while facing 19 batters. Junior RHP James Allen earned his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

The Tigers struck first in the bottom of the first, as junior OF Brett Christopher (Livermore, Calif.) singled up the middle to lead off the inning, after a fielder's choice, senior 1B Brian Martin (Livermore, Calif.) ripped a single up the middle with one out, and Carvutto then delivered a triple into the corner in right field for two runs batted in. Carvutto trotted home on a groundout by Riley.

In the bottom of the third, after Carvutto's one-out double, Johnston ripped a line drive into the gap in left center which skipped by the Wildcat outfielders. Johnston rounded the bases for a two-run inside-the-park home run and a 5-0 Tigers lead.

Wildcats' starter Levi Schlick departed after three innings, allowing five earned on six hits. He threw first-pitch strikes to 12 of 16 batters faced while striking out two against one walk.

After a single from Jared King to lead off the K-State fifth, Wade Hinkel reached on an infield single in the hole between first and second. Mike Kindel then tripled to dead center to plate two runs and pull the Wildcats within three at 5-2.

Kansas State loaded the bases with two out in sixth, Hummel coaxed a first pitch popup on Nick Martini to end the threat.

Riley led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to the right field corner giving the Tigers a 6-2 lead. Hummel departed after six strong, allowing two earned runs on nine hits. He struck out three, walked three and delivered first-pitch strikes to 21 of 30 batters, taking the no decision.

In the top of the seven, Kansas State came back as junior RHP Jared Wagner (Danneville, Calif.) hit his first batter, and then gave up a double to Kindel. After Kent Urban singled home a run and a sacrifice fly from Chase Graskewicz pulled the Wildcats within two runs, Chase Brown reached on a fielder's choice. Brown stole second and came in to score on a single from Tanner Witt. Richardson replaced Wagner, but was greeted by a triple from Jared King to tie the game at 6-6. Martini added a two-out single to right to pate King and give the Wildcats their first lead of the game.

The Tigers mounted a rally in the bottom of the eighth, as Johnston singled and sophomore Tyger Peterson (Palo Alto, Calif.) drew a two-out pinch-hit walk. But RHP Jake Doller came in for Kansas State and retired his only batter of the game to end the threat with tying run on third.

In the ninth, Christopher reached with a leadoff single and advanced to third on a sacrifice and infield groundout. But Allen coaxed a fly out to centerfield to seal the victory and the series sweep for Kansas State.

The Tigers will head to Myrtle Beach, S.C. for the Baseball at the Beach tournament next Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Pacific will face North Carolina State in the opener on Friday at 9 a.m. PT (noon ET), and then have the fourth meeting of the year with Kansas State on Saturday in a 10:30 a.m. PT contest (1:30 p.m. ET). The Tigers wrap the tournament on Sunday at 8 a.m. PT (11 a.m. ET) against Western Kentucky before returning home on Wednesday, March 2, for a mid-week contest with Sacramento State at 6 p.m.
