Feb. 18, 2011

Final Stats

Malibu Calif.

No.15 Pacific Tigers retook the floor for the first time in a week traveling to Malibu to take on the No.9 Pepperdine Waves. Rough waters appeared to be too much as Pacific dropped the match 3-1.

Set Sores for the match were 25-23, 25-22, 23-25 and 25-22

Redshirt sophomore Taylor Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) led the Tigers with 14 kills.

As a team, Pacific's delivered 46 kills on a .197 clip compared to Pepperdine's 61 kills on a .221 success rate. The Tigers won the blocking battle, recording 13.5 rejections compared to the Waves' seven. Pacific's redshirt junior Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.) led the floor with seven total blocks. In set one Pacific gained the preliminary upper hand, opening the match with back-to-back Daley blocks. Offensive contributions from all the members of the Tiger's front line pushed Pacific's lead to seven up 11-4 before the Waves were able to chip away and get themselves back in the game. Pacific kept a lead nearly the entire set but a redshirt freshman Adam Troy (Loomis, Calif.) kill that gave Pacific a 23-20 lead would be the end of the offensive domination. Pacific then relinquished five straight points and dropped the set on an attack error to put the 25th point on the board for the Waves.

The frame was plagued with attack errors from both sides of the court. After a strong beginning, the Tigers finished the frame with just nine kills countered with seven errors for a .061 attack percentage.

In the second set, Pacific, who averages 2.93 blocks per set, tallied five rejections. The stifling defense was not enough to besiege the Waves' offense however, as they grabbed set two with a 25-22 win.

A back and forth point swapping battle ended on three consecutive Wave errors landed the Tigers there fist set win in the third frame 25-23

Pacific opened up the fourth set with a Troy kill and with contributions from Daley and sophomore Matthew Houlihan (San Jose, Calif.)moved ahead to a 10-7 advantage. Pepperdine then strung together a 5-2 run to knot the score at 12. The squads traded points the remainder of the frame. Tied at 22, Pacific then gave up back-to-back kills followed by a service ace by Pepperdines Kasey Crider bringing an end to the contest.

The Waves improved to 5-5, (3-5 MPSF) with the win while the Tigers dropped to 6-8, (2-6 MPSF).

Pacific is next in action Saturday Feb. 19th to play the No.1 USC Trojans.
