The No.15 Pacific Tigers improved to the .500 mark on the year at 6-6 overall with an impressive victory over the No.12 UCSD Tritons at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
Led by junior Florian Gornik (Schwechat, Austria) and redshirt sophomore Taylor Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.) the duo combined for 36 of the Tiger's 46 match kills as Pacific dominated the Tritons.
Set scores for the match: 25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 25-21
In set one the Tigers came out a little sluggish committing errors and falling behind early 4-1. Gornik sparked a flame and cashed in on his first kill to move the Tigers within two down 5-3. The Tigers then began to claw their way back with contributions from redshirt junior Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.) and redshirt freshman Adam Troy (Loomis, Calif.) and on a Hughes kill kept knotted the set up 13 all. back and forth play capped by a Troy kill gave the Tigers a 20-19 advantage. A UCSD service error and another Hughes kill then moved Pacific ahead 22-20 and a timeout call by UCSD. Out of the break the Tigers tallied just one kill but coupled with offensive errors by the Tritons proved to be enough as Pacific put away the first set 25-22.
The Tigers tailed nine kills in the second set, four by the hand of Florian but is was sophomore Patrick Tunnell (Tucson, Ariz.) who punched the final one to claim the set 25-19. In the frame the Tigers hit .412
Pacific dropped the third set of the match 25-23 while outhitting the Tritons .276 to .257.
In the fourth and final frame Gornik grabbed another four of the Tigers 12 kills while Tunnell propped up 10 of his match high 41 assists on the way to a 25-21 set win and the Match victory.
As a team the Tigers amassed 17.5 blocks in the contest, 46 kills, and hit a .333 clip.
With the victory Pacific improved to 6-6 on the year 2-4 in the MPSF while the Tritons fell to 5-8, 2-5 in the conference.
The Tigers return to the floor Friday Feb. 11, hosting No. 8 Irvine at the Alex G. Spanos Center in a match scheduled for 7:00pm.
