Box Score Richmond, VA. – For the second time in as many games the Pacific Field Hockey team played extra minutes to decide a contest, but fell short of the come-back win as Longwood edged the Tigers, 3-2, on Thursday, October 6. The contest, played on the neutral site of Crenshaw Field at the University of Richmond, was the first of three games for the Pacific on the East Coast. The loss dropped the Tigers to 2-7 on the year while the Lancers improved to 7-7.
For Pacific, the game started off on a high note when Paige Counsman staked the Tigers to an early lead as the sophomore netted the opening goal of the day just 5:25 into play. Fighting through a scrum in front of the Lancers' cage, Counsman won the battle for the ball to pick up her first goal of the season and her young career.
Despite the early lead, the Tigers fell behind the Lancers before the first half horn sounded as Longwood's Stacey de Grandhomme took control of the contest midway through the half with a pair of goals. Scoring just four minutes apart and just minutes before the end of the half, de Grandhomme gave the Lancers a one goal lead heading into the break.
Playing to a stalemate through out the second half, the Lancers' nearly held up in regular time as the Tigers waited until the final moments of the game to strike back. With time ticking down and just over :30 seconds to play, senior Amanda Spellman work her magic to deliver the Tigers a game-tying strike and send the contest into overtime. Spellman's goal from just in front of the net was her fourth of the season and sent the game into extra time.
However, the comeback was not in the cards for the Tigers as a familiar foe struck again when de Grandhomme put the finishing touches on her hat-trick just 2:24 into the overtime period. The shot came from the top right of the circle and deflected off Pacific's goalkeeper and into the cage.
The Tigers return to action Saturday, October 8 on Crenshaw Field to take on the host Richmond Spiders at 9:00 AM PST.
