Pacific Field Hockey Falls In Double OT Thriller

Sept. 11, 2010

Final Stats

Burlington, Vt. - The Pacific field hockey team lost a heart-breaking double overtime thriller to Catamount Tournament host Vermont Saturday, September 11th 2010. The Tigers fell to 0-5 on the year.

For the first time this season, the Tigers took the lead. In the 19th minute, red-shirt sophomore Victoria Matsumoto (Vista, Calif.) sent the ball into the circle towards freshman Melissa Maultsby (Fallbrook, Calif.). Maultsby collected the pass, spun around, and scored, giving the Tigers their first lead of the season. The offense wasn't done, as they tied their season high in shots with 11 in the first half.

Goalie Ashlee Schlesier (San Diego, Calif.) and the Tiger defense responded with their strongest effort of the year, and recorded their first scoreless half of the season. Late in the second half, Vermont having turned up the pressure, Taylor Silvestro would collect a pass and tie the game. The two teams would remain tied when the final horn sounded, and the intensity ratcheted up.

Beginning the first overtime, Vermont took the game to another level. Taking five shots and racking up four penalty corners, Schlesier and the Tiger defense refused to budge. Brooke Crane, in goal for Vermont, kept the Tigers off the board as well.

Heartbreak would follow in the second overtime. With 19 seconds to go, Taylor Silvestro scooped up an errant ball and ripped a shot into the back of the net and sinking the Tigers.

For Pacific, Schlesier played all 90 minutes, and recorded 11 saves. Senior Kelly Perkins (Gilroy, Calif.) recorded five shots, all on goal. Matsumoto had her first assist of the year, while Maultsby scored her second goal of the season for Pacific.

The Tigers have a short turnaround as they take on Maine Sunday, September 12th in the finale of the Catamount Classic.
