Irvine, Calif. - Pacific dropped a three game match to No. 8 UC Irvine, 3-0, on Friday, April 17. With the loss the Tigers fell to 8-21 on the year and 0-21 in the MPSF. UC Irvine improved to 15-13 overall and 10-11 in the MPSF.
The game scores for the match were: 30-17, 30-25, and 30-27.
With the first game on the line at 29-15, the Tigers rallied two, with a kill from sophomore Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.), which he followed up with a service ace. UC Irvine recorded four service aces to help take the first game, 30-17. In the first set the Tigers were outhit by the Anteaters, .600 to .217.
Pacific tallied 13 kills in the second game, hitting .156. The Anteaters recorded 14 kills, with a .267 hitting percentage. Trailing 17-15 in the second game, Pacific had a three point run to take their first lead of the match at 18-17. Sophomore Florian Gornik (Schwechat, Austria) registered a kill during the rally. The Anteaters answered back with a six point run to jump out to 23-18. The Tigers tied UC Irvine six times during the game, with two lead changes, but the Anteaters would ultimately come out on top, 30-25.
Ten knotted scores and seven lead changes demonstrate the story for the beginning of the third game. With the game even at 10-10, UC Irvine posted a four point rally which put them in front, 14-10. Later in the game with the Anteaters leading 21-17, the Tigers recorded a three point rally to take the score to 21-20. A block joining Daley and freshman Christian Ahlin (Winnetka, Ill.) was included in the run. Pacific rallied two more points on a UC Irvine game point at 29-25, to take the score to 29-27. But the Anteaters would take the game, 30-27, and the match 3-0. The Tigers hit .214 in the game, compared to the .259 posted by UC Irvine.
The Tigers were led by sophomore Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.), who racked 13 kills, hitting .375. Senior Mark Bauhs (Danville, Calif.) had seven digs. Freshman Patrick Tunnell (Tucson, Ariz.) registered 28 assists.
Carson Clark had a match-high of 14 kills for UC Irvine.
Pacific will complete the 2010 season at UCLA on Saturday, April 17 for a scheduled 7:00 p.m. start time against the Bruins.
