Late Game Rush Too Much For Tigers; Field Hockey Falls 3-2

Aug. 29, 2009

Box Score

Berkeley, Calif. - The Pacific field hockey team could not hold off a late game rush from the Towson University Tigers and they fell Saturday afternoon 3-2 on California's Maxwell Family Field. Pacific drops to 1-1 with the loss.

Despite being outshot 9-2 in the first half, Pacific was perfect nailing the first two goals of the game. Senior Kim Keyawa (Chico, Calif.) grabbed her third goal in two games to open scoring for the Tigers. With her back to the defender, Keyawa made a quick move to her left, sending the ball into the far right corner of the goal.

Senior Katy McDonough (Ventura, Calif.) took off down the right sideline just six minutes later on a breakaway. She forced a penalty stroke after the defense could not adjust to her cutting back inside the circle toward the middle of the field. Pacific looked to ace senior captain Lisa Muhl (Harleysville, Pa.) to take the shot. She delivered, scoring the second goal and putting Pacific up 2-0.

Christina Boarman slipped past Pacific's defense and went one-on-one with freshman goalie Ashlee Schlesier (San Diego, Calif.). The rookie stepped up and grabbed one of her four first period saves. She finished the contest with a new career-high of six saves.

Towson found the back of the goal with 11 minutes left in the half when Jamie Salvador knocked it in after a penalty corner.

But both teams saw two players sit out with yellow cards in the physical battle of the Tigers. At least three minutes of the game were played a player down on each side.

Pacific remained ahead until Boarman knocked in her first goal of the season to tie the game with less than 10 minutes remaining. Four minutes later she assisted Katie DeFilippo in the game-winning goal.

Towson (1-1) kept Pacific out of the circle in the final six minutes to grab the win.

Pacific travels back home to face Kent State on Sept. 3. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on Brookside Field.
