Tigers Defeated by No. 10 UC San Diego, 3-0

San Diego, Calif. - The Pacific men's volleyball team fell to No. 10 UC San Diego, 3-0 on Friday, by a score of 3-0. With the loss the Tigers dropped to 3-23 overall and 0-17 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). The Tritons improved to 11-12 overall and 7-11 in the MPSF.

The set scores for the match were: 30-19, 30-22 and 30-24.

There was six tie scores during the first 12 points of the first set. At the final tie score of 6-6, the Tritons scored four straight points, gaining a lead of 10-6. Later in the set, a five point run by UC San Diego would put them in front, 21-12, but Pacific answered back with a four point rally of their own, bringing the score to 21-16. Junior Jason Borchin (Roseville, Calif.) recorded an ace during the Tigers' run. At 27-17, a kill from junior Kevin Pratte (Hemet, Calif.) and a service ace from Nicolaas Schenk (Kamuela, Hawaii) would record the last points of the set for the Tigers, as they lost the set, 30-19.

The Tritons scored 10 of the first 15 points of the second set, taking an early 10-5 lead. This lead would hold throughout the rest of the set. A short rally at 23-14, on two service aces from freshman Eric Fuchino (Roseville, Calif.), brought the Tigers within eight, at 24-16. Pacific scored three straight points at 28-18, including a kill from freshman Dylan Walker (La Canada, Calif.) and a service ace from freshman Chaz Hindsley (Northfield, Ill.). The Tritons would take the second set by a score of 30-22.

In the third set, the Tigers scored nine of the first 15 points, jumping out to a 9-6 lead. A block from senior Joe Forbes (Westport, Conn.) and Walker, and another from Forbes and Fuchino added to the Pacific lead. The Tritons took a lead at 14-11, but a three point rally, including a kill from senior Jeff Hendershot (Claremont, Calif.), brought the Tigers within one at 14-13. Unfortunately Pacific could not stop UC San Diego, as the Tritons slowly started to increase their lead. UC San Diego marked a 3-0 victory, by taking the third set, 30-24.

Hendershot led the Tigers with nine kills, while Fuchino had 20 assists.

UC San Diego's Jason Spangler had a match-high of 11 kills.

Pacific will be back in action at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 4 at Long Beach State.
