Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific women's water polo team dropped a 7-6 decision to Long Beach State in the fifth place match in the 2009 Big West Conference Women's Water Polo Tournament at Chris Kjeldsen Pool on Sunday, April 26. Pacific finishes the season 9-25, while Long Beach State ends the year at 9-19.
Pacific started the match with an explosive first period. The Tigers took an early lead with a goal from sophomore Dara Tawarahara (Honolulu, Hawai'i) at the 6:17 mark after a Long Beach State ejection. Tawarahara scored another goal about a minute later when lobbed one in to the back of the net to take a 2-0 lead. With 3:34 left in the opening period, sophomore Bethany Quertermous (Humble, Texas) scored on a shot from beyond the five meter mark. Quertermous' goal was followed by a shot from teammate sophomore Meara McCarthy (Simsbury, Conn.) that hit the crossbar and was punched in by freshman Allison Kosich (Stockton, Calif.). Pacific's run continued as Bridget Geck (Huntington Beach, Calif.) scored the Tiger's fifth goal of the quarter with 2:12 left in the quarter. Pacific took at 5-0 lead into the second quarter.
Defense ruled the first four minutes of the second period as neither team was able to score until 3:09 when Long Beach State's Lauren Sieprath netted a goal following a Pacific ejection. Just over a minute later, Sieprath capitalized on a fast break by scoring close to the goal. With :53 seconds left in the half the 49ers cut the Tiger lead to 5-3 when Branwyn Lee found the back of the net. Sieprath scored her third goal of the quarter to pull the 49ers within one with :21 seconds left in the half.
The third quarter saw little action in the beginning. With 3:51 remaining the third quarter, Pacific ended Long Beach State's four goal run when Tawarahara made the five meter shot awarded after a 49er foul. Sieprath answered by scoring her fourth goal of the game with 1:49 left in the third quarter to cut the Tigers' lead to 6-5 lead heading into the final period.
After a quiet start to the fourth quarter, Sieprath knotted the game with a Long Beach State goal with 3:57 left in the game. The 49ers took the lead for the first time after a goal by Kelsie Emerick with 2:11 left to play. Emerick's goal ended up being the game winning goal.
Freshman Lindsey Pengilly (Stockton, Calif.) tallied 10 saves in goal for the Tigers. 49ers goalie, Kristen Stragier recorded four saves in the win.

Stockton, Calif. - The UC Davis women's water polo team topped Cal State Northridge 10-6 in the third place match of the Big West Conference Women's Water Polo Tournament at Chris Kjeldsen Pool on Sunday, April 26th. With the win the Aggies improved to 23-10, while the Matadors fell to 20-16 overall.
The Aggies began the game with an aggressive first quarter. Sophia Patronas scored the first goal of the game a minute and a half after the opening sprint. Teammate, Lindsay Kiyama netted another Aggie goal less than a minute later. Great team work and passing led to UC Davis' third goal on a shot from Ashley Chandler. A crucial save from CSUN's goalie, Jillian Staph turned into a transition goal by Kristin McLaughlin for the first Matador goal of the day with 3:11 left in the first period. Kiyama responded with her second goal of the period a mere 16 seconds later. Davis took a 4-1 lead to the second period.
The second period started with an offensive surge from the Matadors. Sydney Sonoda started a three-goal rally with a goal coming a minute and 19 seconds into the quarter. With 4:35 left in the period, Whitney Delgado narrowed the UC Davis lead to one goal. McLaughlin netted her second goal of the game to tie the score at 4-4. The Aggies regained the lead with a goal from Rachelle Smith with 3:05 remaining in the half. Chandler found the back of the net to extend the Aggie lead to two goals going into the halftime break.
The third quarter was a defensive battle between the Aggies and the Matadors. Both Diana Pivacheck for UC Davis and Jillian Stapf for CSUN recorded three saves in the period. The only goal scored in the quarter came with 5:04 left, as CSUN's Kirra Kylander found the back of the net to bring Cal State Northridge within one goal of the Aggies at 6-5.
UC Davis extended their lead with a quick goal from Kiyama just 25 seconds into the period. A minute later, UCD's Kaylee Miller netted her second goal to take the score to 8-5. UC Davis scored again 40 seconds later, as Miller tallied another goal to give the Aggies their largest lead of the day. Delgado answered for the Matadors to make it 9-6, but the Aggies scored on a goal from Lauren Seidemann with 3:00 remaining in the match to take a commanding 10-6 lead
UC Davis made a goalie change after the half, replacing Casey Hines with Diana Pivachek. Hines recorded five saves while Pivachek made six saves.

UC Irvine Crowned Big West Conference Champions With 13-9 victory Over UC Santa Barbara

Stockton, Calif. - The UC Irvine women's water polo team topped UC Santa Barbara 13-9 in the championship match of the inaugural Big West Conference Women's Water Polo Tournament at Chris Kjeldsen Pool on Sunday, April 26th. With the win the Anteaters improved to 23-9, while the Gauchos dropped to 17-12 overall.
UC Irvine jumped out in front after getting a goal from Erin Kiene with 5:18 left in the opening quarter. Kiene notched another goal less than a minute later giving the Anteaters a two goal lead. The Gauchos got on the board with a goal from Amanda Tipton with just over two minutes remaining in the period. Anteater Caitlin Haskell found the back of the net to make the score 3-1 with :15 seconds left in the first quarter, and take a two goal lead to the second quarter.
An explosive second quarter started with a goal from Tipton one minute into the quarter to cut the Anteaters lead to one goal at 3-2. Just seconds later UCI's Gianna Rossi found the back of the net to take Anteater lead back to 4-2. UCSB responded with a goal from Jillian Waldron with 5:41 remaining in the half. Back and forth play continued as UC Irvine's Cortney Collyer netted a goal with 4:23 left in the period to extend the lead to 5-3. A minute later, UCI captain Julia Fancher launched a shot from beyond the five-meter mark to score her first goal of the game. With just under two minutes left in the half, Cailee Kilroy netted a goal for UCSB to make it a 6-4 UC Irvine lead at the break.
Kat Plummer scored her first goal for UC Irvine :25 seconds after coming out of the halftime break. Just over a minute later, Plummer's goal was matched by UCSB's Gillian Morgan. UCI's Collyer started a run for UC Irvine with her goal at the 5:42 mark of the third quarter. Sarah Frost then added a goal from a well placed shot in the lower left corner of the goal and Plummer netted her second goal of the game to extend UC Irvine's lead to 10-5 with 3:44 left in the period. A goal from Gaucho Alisha Khan ended UC Irvine's three goal run and brought the score to 10-6 with 2:26 remaining in the third period. Fellow Gaucho Claire Buchanan found the back of the net, with back-to-back goals bringing taking the UC Irvine lead to10-7. Collyer notched her third goal of the game with :22 seconds left in the quarter to give the Anteaters an 11-7 lead heading into the final period.
After a scoreless four and a half minutes, Lizzie Rouleau found the back of the net for a UC Santa Barbara goal. UCI scored just a half minute later, with a long range shot from Sarah Frost. Kat Plummer added to UC Irvine's lead with a goal with 1:47 left to play to give the Anteaters a 13-8 lead and seal the victory. Gaucho Elle Quane netted a goal off of a five meter shot with :56 seconds remaining in the game.
Collyer and Plummer each scored three goals to lead the Anteaters. Buchanan had a team-high two scores for the Gauchos.
UC Irvine's Gianna Rossi was named the Most Valuable Player of the Big West Conference Tournament. Rossi tallied seven goals over the course of the tournament, including five goals in the Anteaters' opening game against Long Beach State, one goal in the semifinal win against UC Davis, and one goal in today's match victory.
