April 25, 2009

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - An eight-run fourth inning put the game away as Long Beach State defeated the Pacific baseball team 19-6, on Saturday, April 25.

With the loss, Pacific dropped to 16-21 on the year and 7-7 in the Big West, while the 49ers improved to 19-19 and 6-5 in conference.

Junior RHP Hunter Carnevale (Roseville, Calif.) took the loss for the Tigers and dropped to 2-5 on the year, while RHP Andrew Gagnon (3-5) earned the win for Long Beach State.

After Long Beach State posted four runs in the top of the second, the Tigers came back in the bottom half of the inning and sophomore Brian Martin (Livermore, Calif.) led off with a quick double. One batter later, senior Kurt Wideman (Fallbrook, Calif.) flied out to right field and advanced Martin to third. That set the table for junior Mike Walker's (Marysville, Calif.) double that plated Martin as Pacific inched closer, 4-1.

The 49ers struck again in the top of the third, taking Carnevale out of the game and facing the Tiger bullpen, 8-1. In the bottom of the third, Pacific sent sophomore Nick Longmire (San Diego, Calif.) to the plate and he started off with a lead-off single. Senior Joey Centanni (San Diego, Calif.) followed that up with a single of his own, putting runners on first and second. The third batter of the inning, sophomore J.B. Brown (Alvin, Texas) followed suit and recorded the third-consecutive single to load the bases.

With the bases loaded, senior Mike McKeever (San Diego, Calif.) grounded to the shortstop who tried to make the out at first, but bobbled the ball and did not make the throw. McKeever drove in a run and kept the bases loaded and Pacific cut the lead at 8-2. In the next at-bat, Martin grounded to the second baseman who looked to possibly turn a double play at second, but couldn't come up with the ball for the 49ers' second fielding error in the inning. That brought Centanni home, as Pacific trailed 8-3.

But Long Beach State only needed an eight-run fourth to close the door on the Tigers. Pacific tried to rally with one more run in the fourth and two more in the seventh, falling 19-6.

Junior LHP David Rowse came in relief for the Tiger and held the 49ers to only one run in four innings, tossing three shutout innings of relief.

The final game of the three-game series begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 26. LHP Jamie Niley (Elk Grove, Calif.) will take to the mound for the Tigers on another Salute to the Troops Sunday.
