Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific men's volleyball team was defeated by No. 9 UCLA by a score of 3-0 on Friday, April 17 at the Alex G. Spanos Center. With the loss the Tigers fell to 3-27 overall and 0-21 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). The Bruins improved to 14-14 on the season and 10-11 in the MPSF.
The set scores for the match were: 30-26, 30-21 and 30-21.
In the first set there were 14 tie scores and four lead changes. With the Tigers leading 3-2, a kill from junior Kevin Pratte (Hemet, Calif.) and one from senior Joe Forbes (Westport, Conn.) increased the Tigers' lead to 5-2. During the middle of the set, the two teams battled back and forth. With Pacific trailing 23-21, a service error by the Bruins and a block from Forbes tied the score again at 23-23. After trading points, UCLA scored four straight to take a 28-24 lead and held on for a 30-26 win.
With the Tigers behind 5-4 in the first set, UCLA scored three straight points to extend their lead to 8-4. Later in the set, with the Bruins ahead 21-14, a block from freshman Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.), senior Jeff Hendershot (Claremont, Calif.) and freshman Nicolaas Schenk (Kamuela, Hawaii) followed by a Bruin attack error, brought the Tigers within five, at 21-16. At 25-21, the Bruins went on a five point run, to win the set by a score of 30-21.
The Tigers and the Bruins battled through 10 tie scores through the first 22 points of the third set. At the final tie score, 11-11, UCLA scored three consecutive point to take a 14-11 lead. With Pacific trailing 21-15, a service error by the Bruins and a service ace from freshman Chaz Hindsley (Northfield, Ill.) brought the score to 21-17. From that point, UCLA took control and won the set 30-21 and the match 3-0.
Hendershot led the Tigers with a match-high 14 kills, while junior Jason Borchin (Roseville, Calif.) recorded seven. Junior Mark Bauhs had a match-high of 10 digs.
The Bruins were led by Garrett Muagututia, who had 12 kills and seven digs.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, April 18 at 7 p.m. to take on No. 1 UC Irvine at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
