Berkeley, Calif. - The Pacific women's water polo team lost to No. 5 Cal by a score of 19-5 on Monday, April 13. With the loss, the Tigers fell to 9-22 overall. The Cal Golden Bears improved to 29-6.
The Tigers started out the game scoring first with a goal from freshman Allison Kosich (Stockton, Calif.). Cal responded with their own goal to even the score. Sophomore Dara Tawarahara (Honolulu, Hawaii) found the back of the net to take a 2-1 lead. This lead did not last for long as the Golden Bears scored three more times in the first quarter to take a 5-2 lead. Cal would never relinquish the lead as they scored five more goals in the second quarter. Pacific was able to put one goal on the board to salvage a halftime score of 10-3.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, the second half saw more of the Golden Bears' relentless offense and tight defense. Pacific netted two goals in the third quarter, but could not handle Cal's offense. Cal tallied six goals in the third and three more in the fourth. The Golden Bear defense shut out the Tigers in the final quarter of play, making the final score of 19-5.
Dara Tawarahara led the team with two goals, sophomores Bridget Geck (Huntington Beach, Calif.), Bethany Quertermous (Humble, Texas) each found the net once. Allison Kosich landed the first goal of the game but that was her only goal. Tawarahara had an assist and drew three ejections in her offensive effort. Quertermous and Kosich each drew an ejection in the loss.
Freshman Lindsey Pengilly (Stockton, Calif.) played in goal for the first half, recording seven saves. Junior Jill Hauck (Pottsville, Penn.) relieved Pengilly in the second half. Hauck tallied three saves. Dara Tawarahara and fellow sophomore Courtney Boettger (Stockton, Calif.) each made a steal.
Pacific plays again Tuesday, April 14 at 1:30 p.m. as they host Sonoma State in their final home game of the regular season.
