Tigers Defeated by No. 5 Stanford Cardinal, 3-0

Stanford, Calif. - The Tigers men's volleyball team fell to No. 5 Stanford Cardinal on Tuesday, March 31, by a score of 3-0. With the loss Pacific dropped to 3-22 overall and 0-16 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). The Cardinal improved to 17-8 on the season and 10-6 in the MPSF.

The set scores for the match were 30-22, 30-23 and 30-18.

In the first set, Stanford scored five of the first six points, jumping off to an early 5-1 lead. Pacific brought the score to 5-4, on a three point rally, which included a kill from freshman Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.) and a block assist from junior Kevin Pratte (Hemet, Calif.) and senior Joe Forbes (Westport, Conn.). Later in the set, the Tigers scored two straight points at 27-18, on another kill from Daley and a block by freshman Chaz Hindsley (Northfield, Ill.), Pratte and freshman Nicolaas Schenk (Kamuela, Hawaii), taking the score to 27-20. But the Tigers would not be able to rally back to gain a lead, and lost the set by a score of 30-22.

Stanford and Pacific battled through seven tie scores during the first 16 points of the second set. The final tie score of the set occurred at 8-8, when Stanford scored two straight to take a lead of 10-8. The Cardinal would increase their lead, but another block assist by Hindsley, Pratte, and Schenk rallied the Tigers within four, at 20-16. At 28-20, junior Jason Borchin (Roseville, Calif.) recorded a kill, followed by an ace by junior Kevin Downing (Poipu, Hawaii), taking the score to 28-22. But Stanford scored the last two points they needed for the win, and took the set 30-23.

The Cardinal gained a quick lead on the Tigers, scoring the first four points of the third set. At 12-6, Pacific forced the Cardinal into two consecutive errors, cutting Stanford's lead to 12-8. Later in the set, with the Tigers down 25-14, Daley and Schenk each recorded a kill, to take the score to 25-16. But Pacific could not get a substantial rally going and lost the set 30-18, and the match 3-0.

Schenk led the Tigers with 10 kills, while junior Mark Bauhs (Danville, Calif.) recorded nine digs.

Stanford's Spencer McLachlin had a match-high of 12 kills.

The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, April 3 in San Diego, to take on UC San Diego at 7 p.m.
