Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers baseball team fell to the Stanford Cardinal on Monday, March 30 by a final score of 10-2. With the loss the Tigers dropped to 10-13 overall, while Stanford improved to 8-11 on the season.
The Cardinal jumped off to a quick 9-2 lead through the first three innings. They had 11 hits to accumulate the runs, including a first inning home run by Toby Gerhart. Stanford scored four runs on six hits in the first, four runs on four hits in the second, and one run on one hit in the third.
After a slow start on the mound, the Tigers six relievers combined for 7.2 innings, giving up only five hits and two runs. Senior Larry Holscher (McArthur, Calif.) pitched 3.2 shutout innings, not allowing a hit and recording two strike outs. Along with sophomore Corey Kohnke (Dana Point, Calif.), senior Cole Akins (Seattle, Wash.), sophomore Thomas Berolzheimer (Stockton, Calif.) and junior Andrew Mintun (Stockton, Calif.), Holscher and the Tigers' bullpen combined to strike out nine Cardinal batters in relief of their starter.
Pacific had seven hits in the game, including seeing freshmen Josh Simms (La Mesa, Calif.), Brett Christopher (Livermore, Calif.), and Allen Riley (Fresno, Calif.) each record their first hits as Tigers. The Tigers scored one run in the first and one in the second to post their two runs in the contest. Freshman catcher Jake Sylvester (Livermore, Calif.) recorded the only RBI for Pacific.
The losing pitcher was junior David Hovey (San Diego, Calif.), who fell to 0-1. Hovey lasted 1.1 innings while giving up nine hits and eight runs to the Cardinal.
Stanford's Danny Sandbrink was the winning pitcher, improving to 1-1 on the season. In four innings of work, Sandbrink gave up two runs on three hits while striking out five and walking two.
The Tigers are back in action on Friday at 2 pm at UC Santa Barbara.
