Tigers Fall to California Baptist, 3-1

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers men's volleyball team was defeated by the California Baptist University on Friday, March 20, by a score of 3-1. With the loss the Tigers fell to 3-19 overall, while the Lancers improved to 21-5 on the season.

The set scores for the match were: 30-20, 30-26, 31-33 and 30-27.

In the first set, the Lancers scored 10 of the first 14 points, jumping out to a 10-4 lead. With the Tigers down 20-14, a kill from senior Joe Forbes (Westport, Conn.) and one from freshman Dylan Walker (La Canada, Calif.) constituted two of the three point rally, to take the score to 20-17. Unfortunately with the score at 25-19, Cal Baptist would score four straight points taking the score to 29-19, and would score the game point after a sideout to win the set by a score of 30-20.

With the Tigers behind, 6-5, in the second set, the Lancers scored four straight points increasing their lead to five, at 10-5. Later with the Tigers still trailing at 15-10, four consecutive points, including another kill from Forbes, brought them within one, at 15-14. The Lancers were able to jump out at 22-18, but with a kill and a service ace from Forbes along with a kill from senior Jeff Hendershot (Claremont, Calif.), the Tigers decreased the Lancers lead to 22-21. With Lancers game point on the line, at 29-24, the Tigers recorded two more points, including a block from freshman Eric Fuchino (Rosevile, Calif.) and Forbes. But the Tigers could not rally any more points and California Baptist would take the set by a score of 30-26.

In the third set there was 22 tie scores and five lead changes. The set went back and forth due to 14 Cal Baptist service errors and six committed by the Tigers. The decisive ending started with the Lancers leading 29-27. The Tigers scored two straight on a Cal Baptist service error and a block from junior Jason Borchin (Roseville, Calif.) and freshman Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.), to tie the score at 29-29. The score would tie again at 30-30, and with the Lancers one point away from taking the match, at 31-30, Pacific scored three straight to win the set by a final score of 33-31.

The fouth set had 13 tie scores and three lead changes. With the Tigers behind 17-15, a kill from Hendershot and a service ace from Borchin, Pacific tied the score at 17-17. Later the Lancers regained their lead at 26-23, but the Tigers brought it within one at 26-25, with two kills from Hendershot. At 29-26, a kill from Forbes recorded the Tigers final point of the set, as the Lancers would sideout on the following play to win the set by a score of 30-27, and the match 3-1.

Hendershot led the Tigers with 17 kills, while Daley and Forbes both had 11. Junior Mark Bauhs (Danville, Calif.) moved to number 10 on Pacific's career leaders with 432 career digs.

The Lancers' Levi Cabral had a match high of 24 kills.

Pacific will be back in action on Friday, March 27 in the Alex G. Spanos Center to take on UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m.
