Santa Barbara, Calif. - Pacific men's volleyball team was defeated by No. 13 UC Santa Barbara, 3-0, on Friday, Feb. 20. The Tigers' record fell to 2-14 overall and 0-11 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). The Gauchos improved to 4-8 on the season and 2-7 in the MPSF.
The set scores for the match were: 30-26, 30-23, and 30-17.
Despite a back and forth start to the first set, the Gauchos gained a seven point lead, 17-10, on several short runs. Later in the set, Pacific decreased the Gaucho lead to five points, 19-14, on a kill from freshman Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.) and a service ace from junior Mark Bauhs (Danville, Calif.). The Tigers were able to pull within three at 26-23, on three consecutive points, including two kills from Daley. At 29-25, Hendershot recorded a kill for the Tigers, which would be the last point the Tigers would score in the set. The Gauchos took the set by a score of 30-26.
The Gauchos accumulated a quick lead which remained through the beginning of the second set. At 10-7, the Tigers scored three straight point to tie the score at 10-10, on a kill from Daley, a block assist from freshman Nicolaas Schenk (Kamuela, Hawaii), Forbes and Hendershot, and a kill from junior Jason Borchin (Roseville, Calif.). UC Santa Barbara regained the lead, which again was taken away, as Pacific tied the score at 13-13. Later in the set, with the Gauchos out in front, 25-19, the Tigers scored three straight points on two kills from Forbes and one by Bauhs. After a kill from Hendershot at 26-23, the Gauchos went on a four point run, winning the set by a score of 30-23.
In the beginning of the third set, the Tigers and the Gauchos battled through six tied scores. Daley broke the 5-5 tie with a kill, giving Pacific a 6-5 lead. Unfortunately, UC Santa Barbara answered back with six straight points, taking the score to 11-6. Down 20-11, the Tigers scored three, including an ace by freshman Chaz Hindsley (Northfield, Ill.), making the score 20-14. Pacific scored their last two points on a kill from junior Clay Ostrander (Wheaton, Ill.) and an ace by Borchin, but the Gauchos would finish out the set, 30-17, to take the match, 3-0.
Borchin had six kills and six digs for the Tigers, while Daley and Hendershot also each recorded six kills.
Scott Slaughter had a match-high of 12 kill for UC Santa Barbara.
The Tigers will be back in action on Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. to take on No. 9 Brigham Young University in the Alex G. Spanos Center.
