Stanford, Calif. -
The Pacific field hockey team fell to Longwood University 3-1 in the first round of the NorPac Conference Championships Thursday morning. The Tigers fell to 4-12 with the loss and move into the consolation rounds.
Longwood opened up scoring seven minutes into play. Christina Verhulst broke away through the Pacific defense and sent a pass down into Julia Hernandez on the left side. The NorPac East Player of the Year chipped in the goal over a laid out Ashlee Schlesier (San Diego, Calif.).
Lauren van de Kamp put the Lancers up 2-0 just six minutes later on a pass from Melissa Strickland.
First Team All-Conference senior Katy McDonough (Ventura, Calif.) set up the Tigers response. She sent a ball from mid-field to a wide open Kim Keyawa (Chico, Calif.). The 2009 team goals leader made a quick move past Longwood's charging Erin Bollinger and slapped the ball into an open cage with 19:24 on the clock.
The Tigers would get a chance to tie the game after McDonough beat two defenders to break into the open. She passed across to an open Robin Nelson (Morgan Hill, Calif.). The sophomore forward mishit the ball on the slick turf and lost her one-on-one against Bollinger, who finished with five saves.
The Lancers capitalized on a corner 10 minutes after the break to close scoring in the contest. Kelsey Turner found Kimberly Sullivan at the top of the circle. Sullivan knocked it in to put Longwood ahead 3-1.
Schlesier finished with a game-high seven saves in her first start in three games.
Pacific will see the loser of No. 15 Stanford and Appalachian State on Friday at 11 a.m.
