Pacific Plays Up With Penn State

Oct. 24, 2009

Box Score

Bloomington, Ind. - Senior Kim Keyawa's (Chico, Calif.) two goals were not enough to help lift the Pacific field hockey team over Penn State (6-11) Saturday morning as the Tigers fell 6-4 on the road. Junior Kelly Perkins (Gilroy, Calif.) earned her second goal of the season.

Freshman Dinah Compton (Escondido, Calif.) was assisted by fellow freshman Jenna Vivian (Gilroy, Calif.) in her first collegiate goal. Pacific dropped to 3-9 with the loss.

The teams met on neutral turf at Indiana University. Penn State came out and scored early. Jenny Purvis sent in her first goal of the season 2:30 minutes into the contest on the rebound from a penalty corner. The Nittany Lions hit the back of the cage two more times before Pacific responded.

Keyawa rebounded her own shot after a penalty corner and scored with 11 minutes left in the period. Just over 30 seconds later, Vivian passed the ball to Compton on fast break who scored to pull the Tigers within one goal. Pacific outshot the Nittany Lions 4-2 in the final 10 minutes, but could not tie the score before the break.

Perkins stole the ball from a defender in the circle 1:54 minutes into the second half and tied the game at three all. Penn State (6-11) then went on the offensive, putting up 16 shots on their way to three more goals. Keyawa finally answered with a hard shot with 47 seconds remaining in the game to net her sixth goal in the season.

Junior Christina Niccum (Simi Valley, Calif.) grabbed 10 saves in her first start of the season, fending off 28 Penn State shots.

The Tigers play the last contest of their 3-game road trip against No. 20 Indiana Sunday, Oct. 25 at 9 a.m. PST.
