Stockton, Calif.- Pacific fell to UC San Diego on Friday, Jan. 30, by a score of 3-0.
With the loss, the Tigers are 2-7 overall and 0-4 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). The Tritons improved to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in MPSF.
The set score for the match were 30-25, 30-18, and 30-25.
Throughout much of the first set, Pacific and UC San Diego battled back and forth through nine tie scores. With the score tied at 4-4, the Tritons scored four consecutive points, to give them a lead of 8-4. Down 11-7, moments later, the Tigers were able to catch back up and tie the score at 11-11 on a kill by freshman Nicolaas Schenk (Kamuela, Hawaii), an error by UC San Diego, an ace by Schenk, followed by another error by UC San Diego. The Tigers and Tritions would tie the score again at 12-12, 14-14, 17-17, and 18-18. But then the Tritons were able to take off. They scored five straight points to make the score, 25-19. At 29-23, a possible game point for UC San Diego, Pacific got a sideout and nabbed the next point by forcing the Tritons into an attack error, making the score 29-25. But UC San Diego scored the following point to win the set by a score of 30-25.
In the second set, the Tritons were able to score points quickly and get the game started with a 7-3 lead. A sideout on a kill from freshman Dylan Walker (La Canada, Calif.) followed by an ace by Walker brought Pacific back within two at 7-5. Later in the set, with the score at 11-8, the Tigers tied the score at 11-11, with a kill from Schenk, an error by UC San Diego, and ace by freshman Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.). Unfortunately, the Tritons raced back out in front with five of the next seven points to go up, 16-13. At 19-15, the Tigers were able cut the Tritons lead in half, on an error by UC San Diego and a block assist by Daley, junior Jason Borchin (Roseville, Calif.), and Schenk to bring the score to 19-17. Pacific pulled within two points again at 20-18 on a service error by the Tritons. UC San Diego, however, closed the set by keeping the Tigers scoreless through ten points, and winning by a score of 30-18. The Tigers hitting percentage was .130 (10 kills, 23 attempts, 7 errors), compared to the Tritons .583 (17 kills, 24 attempts, 3 errors).
The third set was a back and forth affair, with each squad rattling off multiple points in a row. The fifth tie of the set came at 18-18, but the Tritons scored three straight points to regain a lead of three, with the score at 21-18. UC San Diego would not relinquish the lead the rest of the way. At 27-24, junior Kevin Pratte (Hemet, Calif.) recorded a kill to make the score 27-25. The Tigers would not score again and the Tritons would take the third and final set by a score of 30-25.
Schenk led the Tigers with 10 kills, and Pratte led the Pacific with six digs.
Wil Ehrman had a match-high of 18 kills for UC San Diego.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 8 p.m. in the Alex G. Spanos Center.
