Santa Barbara, Calif.- The Pacific Tigers were defeated by Brigham Young University, 3-0, in their final game of the Elephant Bar/UC Santa Barbara Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 10.
After the loss the Tigers are 1-3 overall, while BYU moved to 1-2 on the season.
The set scores for the match were: 30-28, 30-18 and 30-26.
In the first set, the Cougars started off with a quick 3-0 lead. The Tigers remained behind during most of the first set, however on with a kill from junior Jason Borchin (Roseville, Calif.), an error by the Cougars and another kill from Borchin, the Tigers battled back to be within one of BYU, at 18-17. At a score of 29-27, freshman Sean Daley (Moorpark, Calif.) racked one of his 14 total kills to bring Pacific back within a point, however a kill from BYU's Kent Tuttle on the next play, would be enough to take the first set by a score of 30-28.
In the second set, the Tigers earned the first point with an attack from outside hitter Borchin. The Cougars then scored five consecutive points, to put the score at 5-1. With the score 14-9, senior Joe Forbes (Westport, Conn.) recorded a kill, to bring the score to 14-10. BYU went on to score four straight points to put them out in front by a score of 18-10. Freshman Dylan Walker (La Canada, Calif.) recorded a kill and the last point of the set for Pacific, bringing score to 27-18. The Cougars would finish up the set by a score of 30-18. Pacific's hitting percentage for the set was .065, compared to BYU's .409.
Although the Tigers trailed throughout the third set, they kept their deficit minimal. BYU gained a 3-0 lead to start the set. But with one of the six service errors committed by the Cougars in the set, the Tigers brought the score to 3-1. At a score of 14-8, Pacific scored five consecutive points making the score 14-13. Two of the points were service aces by freshman Nicolaas Schenk (Kamuela, Hawaii).
Unfortunately, Pacific could not get over the hump to take the lead on the Cougars. Late in the set, a Pacific sideout on a block from junior Kevin Pratte (Hemet, Calif.) followed by a service ace by Mark Bauhs (Danville, Calif.) the score was 26-25, in the favor of BYU. In the final five points of the set, BYU's Andrew Steward got three of his kills to help BYU to victory, by a score of 30-26.
Daley recorded 14 kills with a hitting percentage of .684 for the Tigers, while Forbes had eight, hitting .667.
Andrew Stewart led BYU with 13 kills.
Pacific's next game is Wednesday, Jan. 14 against Stanford at the Alex G. Spanos Center at 7 p.m.
