The Pacific baseball team dropped the first game of a three-game series at No. 10 UC Irvine by a score of 9-1 at Anteater Ballpark on Friday, May 9. The Tigers fall to 10-36, 2-17 in Big West Conference play, while the Anteaters improve to 32-12, 9-7 in league games.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, scoring on a pair of walks by UC Irvine starter Scott Gorgen, a ground out and a passed ball to get a run without a hit.
UC Irvine struck right back in the bottom of the first, scoring on RBI singles by Ben Orloff and Josh Tavelli and a two-run double by Dillon Bell to take a 4-1 lead. The Anteaters added a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from Francis Larson to make it 5-1. The Anteaters added three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to help seal the victory.
Tiger starter Joey Centanni (San Diego, Calif.) went five innings, allowing six runs (two earned). He took the loss, falling to 0-4 on the season. Junior Casey Neimeyer (Woodland, Calif.) tossed two innings of scoreless relief for the Tigers, while freshman Corey Kohnke (Pilot Hill, Calif.) gave up three runs in one inning of work.
Gorgen (10-2) earned the win for the Anteaters, giving up just two hits. He allowed no earned runs and struck out nine Tigers. Kyle Necke pitched a scoreless ninth inning for UC Irvine.
Junior Mike McKeever (San Diego, Calif.) hit his team-leading 19th double for the Tigers, while senior Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and freshman Brian Martin (Livermore, Calif.) each added singles. Orloff, Larson and Bell each had two hits for the Anteaters.
The Tigers and Anteaters will meet again on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
