Tigers Rally Late, But Fall at Oregon State, 8-6

Corvallis, Ore. - The Pacific baseball team dropped an 8-6 decision at Oregon State on Saturday, May 24. The Tigers fall to 14-40, while the Beavers improve to 27-24.

The Beavers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single by John Wallace. Oregon State then scored seven times in the bottom of the fifth inning to break the game open. A three-run double by Lonnie Lechelt, a two-run double by Logan Boyd and an RBI single by Ryan Ortiz accounted for six of the runs, as the Beavers also scored on a ground out to take an 8-0 lead.

The Tigers did not get their first hit until the top of the sixth inning, when senior Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) lined a base hit to right field. Pacific scored three times in the top of the eighth inning, scoring on a Ching grounder that was bobbled by the Beaver second baseman Lechelt. Freshman Nick Longmire (San Diego, Calif.) doubled to right field a couple of batters later to knock in two runs and make it 8-3.

Pacific scored three more times in the ninth inning, as junior Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) doubled down the left field line to drive in all three runs. After a single by Ching, the Tigers had the potential tying runs on base, but the Tigers couldn't convert.

Junior Mark McCain (Dallas, Texas) allowed five earned runs in 4 1-3 innings of work, taking the loss to fall to 1-6. Reliever David Rowse (Pleasanton, Calif.) pitched three scoreless innings for the Tigers.

Jorge Reyes allowed one earned run in eight innings of work to improve to 4-3 on the year. Taylor Starr got two outs to record his first save of the year.

The Tigers conclude the series at Oregon State with a 1:00 p.m. game at Goss Stadium on Sunday, May 25.
