The Pacific baseball team dropped a 15-2 decision at Oregon State on Friday, May 23. The Tigers fall to 14-39, while the Beavers improve to 26-24.
The Beavers sent 19 batters to the plate in the first two innings, scoring seven runs in the first and four in the second. The Beavers got an RBI single from Daniel Robertson, a two-run single from Logan Boyd and a grand slam by Lonnie Lechelt to take a 7-0 lead. Oregon State scored in the second inning on an error by the Tigers, an RBI double by Jordan Lemmerton and a two-run homer by Logan Boyd.
Oregon State added three more runs in the fifth inning to make it 14-0 on an RBI single by John Wallace, a sacrifice fly by Ryan Ortiz and a bases loaded walk to Boyd.
Although the teams ended up even in hits for the game at 11 each, the Tigers didn't get on the scoreboard until the seventh inning. Pacific scored on an RBI ground-out by junior Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) and a solo home run to left field by senior Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.). The Beavers answered back with a run in the bottom of the seventh, when freshman Corey Kohnke (Dana Point, Calif.) hit Joey Wong to knock in a run.
Sophomore Hunter Carnevale (Roseville, Calif.) took the loss for the Tigers to fall to 2-4 on the season, allowing nine runs in 1 1-3 innings of work. Oregon State starting pitcher Mike Stutes (4-7) picked up the win, scattering 11 hits in seven innings, allowing both Tiger runs.
Ching, senior Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.) and juniors Mike McKeever (San Diego, Calif.) and Kurt Wideman (Fallbrook, Calif.) each had two hits for the Tigers.
McKeever extended his streak of getting on base to nine consecutive plate appearances, before grounding out to third in the eighth inning.
The Tigers continue the series at Oregon State with a 2:00 p.m. game at Goss Stadium on Saturday, May 24. The game will be televised by Fox Sports NorthWest.
