STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific baseball team closed out its 2008 home schedule with an 8-4 Big West Conference victory over Cal State Northridge on Sunday, May 18, at Klein Family Field. The Tigers improve to 13-38, 5-19 in Big West Conference play, while the Matadors fall to 23-30, 7-14 in league games. The Tigers took two of three games to win the series, their first Big West series win on the season.
The Tigers jumped ahead 4-0 after a two-run double to right field by sophomore Mike Walker (Marysville, Calif.), a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by senior John Joines (Milpitas, Calif.). Six straight Tigers reached base in scoring the four runs, which signaled the end for Matador starting pitcher Ryan Juarez.
After five scoreless innings, the Matadors got to Tiger starter Tyler Waldron (Pilot Hill, Calif.) for two runs in the top of the sixth inning, on an RBI single by John Parham and a double play. Pacific got those two runs back in the bottom of the inning on a two-run homer by senior Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.) to take the lead to 6-2. It was the first home run of the year by Manning.
The Tigers added a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh on RBI singles from Joines and senior Noah St. Urbain (Stockton, Calif.) to make the score 8-2.
Cal State Northridge scored two more times in the eighth inning, on a fielder's choice and an RBI single by Jason Dabbs.
Waldron (3-6) picked up the win for the Tigers, allowing two runs in seven innings of work. Freshman Thomas Berolzheimer (Stockton, Calif.) pitched the final 1 1-3 innings to close it out. Juarez (3-4) took the loss for the Matadors.
Senior Adam Ching led the Tigers with three hits, while Joines and freshman Nick Longmire (San Diego, Calif.) each added a pair of hits for the Tigers.
The Tigers are next in action with a game at Santa Clara on Tuesday, May 20. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
