Walks Come Back to Bite Tigers in 10-3 Loss to No. 23 Long Beach State

Long Beach, Calif. - Six of the 11 free bases issued by Pacific pitchers came around to score as the Tigers fell to No. 23 Long Beach State, 10-3, on Friday, Apr. 25.

The loss dropped Pacific to 8-29 on the season and 2-11 in Big West Conference action. Long Beach State, meanwhile, moved to 24-15 overall and 6-4 in conference play.

The 49ers jumped out with two runs in both the first and second innings to take a 4-0 lead. Three of Long Beach State's first four runs reached base without the benefit of a hit as two were walked an one was hit by a pitch.

The Tigers came back with a single run in the third as junior Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) blasted a one out triple into deep left-center field. Senior Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) delivered an RBI ground out to make it 4-1.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, Long Beach State continued to pile on the runs, adding one in the third and three in the fourth on a three-run home run from Shane Peterson to push their lead to 8-1.

Pacific plated two in the fifth on an two-run single from sophomore Mike Walker (Marysville, Calif.), but Long Beach State added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings to take the game, 10-3.

Long Beach State's Andrew Liebel (5-2) earned the victory, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks in seven innings.

Pacific starter Tyler Waldron (Pilot Hill, Calif.) suffered t5he loss (2-5) allowing eight runs on six hits and five walks in 3.1 innings.

The Tigers and 49ers continue their three game series on Saturday, Apr. 26 at 2 p.m.
