Tigers Fall At Santa Clara, 11-3

Santa Clara, Calif. - The Pacific baseball team dropped an 11-3 decision to Santa Clara at Schott Stadium on Wednesday, April 2. Pacific falls to 5-20, while Santa Clara improves to 16-9.

Santa Clara got on the scoreboard first, striking for eight runs in the bottom of the third inning. Tiger starting pitcher Corey Kohnke (Dana Point, Calif.) gave up eight runs in two and a third innings and fell to 1-2 on the season. A sacrifice fly by Evan LeBlanc scored the first run, followed by a bases loaded walk to Ryan Conan to plate the second run. Gabe Alcantar then hit a grand slam over the left field wall. After Kohnke hit Geoff Klein, Jon Karcich hit his fourth home run of the year to make it 8-0.

The Tigers struck back immediately in the top of the fourth inning, scoring three runs. The Tigers scored on a wild pitch and sacrifice flies from freshmen Nick Longmire (San Diego, Calif.) and Brian Martin (Livermore, Calif.) to cut the Bronco lead to 8-3. Juniors Mike McKeever (San Diego, Calif.) and Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) each doubled and scored a run for the Tigers.

The Broncos got back two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Tommy Medica and an RBI single by Klein to take the lead back to 10-3. Santa Clara made it 11-3 in the bottom of the sixth after Karcich was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Steve Kalush (2-1) picked up the win for the Broncos, pitching two perfect innings with four strikeouts. Sophomore David Hovey (San Diego, Calif.), David Rowse (Livermore, Calif.) and juniors Casey Neimeyer (Woodland, Calif.) and Cole Akins (Seattle, Wash.) each pitched an inning for the Tigers without allowing an earned run.

The Tigers are next in action with a home game against UC Santa Barbara on Friday, April 4. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Klein Family Field.
