Stockton, Calif.- After getting out to an early 1-0 lead, the Pacific baseball squad suffered a 11-1 loss to No. 15 Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, Apr. 19.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 8-27 overall and 2-9 in the Big West Conference. Cal State Fullerton moved to 22-13 on the season and 8-3 in conference play.
The Tigers broke through an early pitchers duel in the bottom of the fourth inning as senior Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) pulled a double down the left field line. Sophomore Matt Fuson (Lodi, Calif.) moved Ching to third on a sacrifice bunt and reached on an errant throw. Junior Mike McKeever (San Diego, Calif.) was hit by the first pitch he saw to load the bases with no outs.
After Ching was forced out at the plate on an chopper to first from freshman Brian Martin (Livermore, Calif.), freshman Nick Longmire (San Diego, Calif.) beat out a high hopper to third, driving in Fuson. Unfortunately the Tigers' threat was ended but a ground ball double play.
The 15th ranked Titans used the defensive escape to thrust their offense into gear. Cal State Fullerton scored two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, then dropped seven runs on the Tigers in the eighth to take the game, 11-1.
Titan starter, Daniel Renken earned the victory (4-2) allowing one run on four hits and three walks in eight innings. Renken recorded seven strikeouts in the win.
