Tigers Surrender Early Lead, Fall to Cal Poly, 10-4

San Luis Obispo, Calif. - Leading 4-1 in the second inning, the Pacific bats went cold as Cal Poly scored nine runs in final four innings to defeat the Tigers, 10-4, on Saturday, Apr. 12.

The loss dropped Pacific to 8-23 on the season and 2-6 in Big West Conference play. Cal Poly, meanwhile, moved to 12-18 overall and 2-6 in conference play.

Junior Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) got Pacific off to a quick start in the top of the first with a single down the left field line. Oliveira's speed drew a throw over to first, when the ball got away Joe scampered all the way to third. One out later, junior Kurt Wideman (Fallbrook, Calif.) delivered an RBI ground out to push Pacific ahead, 1-0.

Cal Poly answered Pacific's run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Brent Morel.

The Tigers got right back on top in the second with three runs on four hits. Freshman Nick Longmire (San Diego, Calif.) stroked a single up the middle to start the rally. Longmire stole second, then scored on an RBI double from senior Noah St. Urbain (Stockton, Calif.). Senior John Joines (Milpitas, Calif.) reached on a bunt single to put runners at the corners. One out later, Joines stole second. Freshman J.B. Brown (Alvin, Texas) delivered both St. Urbain and Joines with a single into right-center to put the Tigers in front, 4-1.

The score remained 4-1 until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Cal Poly began its comeback. Logan Schafer led off the fifth with a triple for the Mustangs, Morel followed with his second RBI single to pull Cal Poly within two runs at 4-2.

Pacific starter, junior Mark McCain (Dallas, Texas) exited the game following the fifth and the Mustang offense scored eight runs over the next three innings against the Pacific bullpen to earn the 10-4 victory.

Cal Poly's Brian Grening (1-2) earned the victory allowing two runs on four hits in six innings of relief.

Pacific sophomore David Rowse (0-2) suffered the loss, giving up one run on two hits in one-third inning of work.

Oliveira led the Tigers offense with two hits in the loss.

DJ Mauldin picked up his first save of the season with two innings of scoreless relief.

The Tigers and Mustangs wrap up their three game set on Sunday, Apr. 13 at 1 p.m. with the rubber game of the series.
