San Luis Obispo, Calif. - A dominant performance on the mound from freshman Tyler Waldron (Pilot Hill, Calif.) and a two-run home run from freshman J.B. Brown (Alvin, Texas) lifted the Pacific baseball team to a 3-1 win over Cal Poly on Friday, April 11.
The victory moved the Tigers to 8-22 on the season and 2-5 in the Big West Conference. Cal Poly, meanwhile, fell to 11-18 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
Waldron and Cal Poly starter Eric Massingham locked horns in an battle of aces that lived up to expectations. Each starter shut down the opposing offense in the first three innings.
Waldron's first mistake of the evening gave the Mustangs the lead as Logan Schafer led of the fourth inning with a solo home run over the center field wall.
Brown answered for the Tigers in the top of the fifth with a two-run blast to right. Senior Brett Manning (Boulder, Colo.) was along for the right after reaching first via a single up the middle.
Leading 2-1, Pacific added an insurance run in the top of the sixth on a single from junior Mike McKeever (San Diego, Calif.), and back-to-back two out singles by freshman Nick Longmire (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Kurt Wideman (Fallbrook, Calif.).
A two-run lead proved to more than Waldron needed as he tossed his second complete game of the season with pick up his second victory (2-3). Tyler allowed one run on seven hits and did not walk a batter, while striking out seven Mustangs.
Massingham took the loss (1-4) allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk in 5.2 innings.
McKeever finished the day 3-for-4, while Brown and Manning each posted 2-for-3 efforts.
The Tigers and Mustangs continue their three-game series on Saturday, April 12 at 6 p.m.
