Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific Baseball team suffered a 16-7 loss to Gonzaga on Sunday, Mar. 9.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 2-10 on the season, while Gonzaga moved to 6-5 by sweeping the three game series with the Tigers.
Gonzaga scored nine runs in the first four innings, including a three run home run in the second from Ryan Wiegand.
Pacific tried to battle back in the bottom of the fourth as the Tigers plated four runs on six hits. Freshman Nick Longmire (San Diego, Calif.) started Pacific's rally with a one-out triple to right. Senior Jason Haar (San Diego, Calif.) drove in Longmire on a sacrifice fly to make it 9-1. With two down in the inning, Pacific got three straight singles from sophomore Mike Walker (Marysville, Calif.), junior Joe Oliveira (San Diego, Calif.) and freshman J.B. Brown (Alvin, Texas) to load the bases.
An infield single by freshman Beck Wheeler (San Diego, Calif.) drove in Walker, then senior John Joines (Milpitas, Calif.) plated Oliveira and Brown with a double to left-center. Senior Adam Ching (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) drew a walk to load the bases once again, but junior Kurt Wideman (Fallbrook, Calif.) lined out to center to end the inning at 9-4.
The Gonzaga bats continued to put runs on the board, scoring in every inning but the fifth to take a 16-4 lead into the ninth.
The Tigers tried a late rally, pushing across three runs on a two-run double by Ching and an RBI ground out from Wideman, but it was too late.
Gonzaga starter Cory Powell (2-1) earned the win, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk in six innings.
Pacific starter, freshman Corey Kohnke (Dana Point, Calif.) took the loss (1-1), giving up six runs on seven hits and two walks in two innings.
The Tigers return to the field on Tuesday, Mar. 11 as Pacific travels to Sacramento, Calif. to face the Sacramento State Hornets at 2 p.m.
