Game Two Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - With junior Chelsea Engle (Folsom, Calif.) dominating game one, senior Alyce Jorgensen (Los Altos, Calif.) one upped her fellow pitcher, throwing a one hitter in game two as Pacific took a pair from Princeton on Wednesday, March 19. The Tigers took the opening game, 6-1, while posting a 3-2 victory in the second contest. With the wins Pacific moves to 18-16 overall while Princeton drops to 3-11.

In a battle of the Tigers, Pacific came out on top, dominating both in the circle and at the plate in the opening game of the double-header. Following up her one-hitter from a day ago, Engle gave up three hits and one run to Princeton while striking out 11 batters in the game.

In the top of the first, Princeton struck first blood, posting a single run in the inning that would turn out to be the only run scored by the visiting Tigers in the contest. A two out walk to Kathryn Welch would come back to bite Engle in the inning as Kelsey Quist doubled into left-centerfield, plating Welch from first base.

However, from that double on, Engle would allow just three baserunners, one on a single in the second, a second on a walk in the third and the final baserunner of the game for Princeton on an error in the fourth inning. After the error in the fourth and a sacrifice that moved the runner to second, Engle struck out the next four batters she faced, while retiring 12 straight hitters to end the game. The win moved Engle to 12-6 on the season.

Offensively, Pacific did not strike until the bottom of the third inning when freshman Lindsey Pierce (Camarillo, Calif.) and sophomore Brittany Hendrickson (San Jose, Calif.) connected back-to-back hits to score the first run of the game. The Tigers would take the lead in the fourth on an opposite field blast by freshman Nicole Matson (Castaic, Calif.) to start the inning. The homerun was the sixth of the season, giving the freshman shortstop the team lead.

Pacific would tack on a pair of runs in both the fifth and the sixth inning to pull away from Princeton and secure their 17th win of the year. In the fifth, Pacific got a pair of unearned runs as Matson once again came through for the Tigers, knocking a two-RBI single through the middle that plated junior Casey Goldsand (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and sophomore Kellee Wilson (Tracy, Calif.).

In the sixth, the Tigers strung together three two-out hits at the top of their order to score their two runs, capped by a two-RBI double into right-center by Wilson.

After witnessing Engle throw a masterful performance in the circle in game one, Jorgensen followed suit with her own masterpiece, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning before relinquishing the her first hit of the contest.

To start the contest, Jorgensen retired the first 10 batters she faced before losing her bid for perfection in the fourth inning on her first walk of the contest. After the walk, Jorgensen continued her dominance, retiring the next nine Princeton hitters she faced until hitting Welch with one out in the top of the seventh inning. With Welch aboard, Quist ended Jorgensen's bid for her first career no-hitter, roping a double down the leftfield line for Princeton's only hit of the game.

With the no-hitter gone, the shutout disappeared next as a wild pitch allowed the first run of the game for Princeton to cross the plate. A ground out to Goldsand for the second out of the inning gave Princeton their second run of the game.

Despite losing the shutout, Jorgensen did pick up her third win of the season, posting eight strikeouts to go along with two walks and one hit in seven innings pitched.

With Jorgensen in the circle, the Tigers posted three runs on the board for their starter in the contest, getting all three of their runs in the second inning to pick up their 18th win of the season, moving two games over .500.

With one out in the inning, the Tigers picked up back-to-back walks to junior Briana Santos (Garden Grove, Calif.) and senior Mandy Hickman (Phoenix, Ariz.) to start their scoring rally. Pierce followed the pair of walks with an infield single to the rightside, loading the bases for the top of the lineup.

After the second out was record on a sharp line drive to center by Hendrickson, Goldsand picked up her easiest RBI of the season, working five pitch walk to force home the first run of the inning. With one run across, Wilson added to her team-lead in RBI with a two-RBI single up the middle that plated both Hickman and Pierce.

On the day, Goldsand led the way with a .600 batting average, knocking out three hits in five official at bats while scoring two runs and knocking in one herself. In two hits, Wilson posted four RBI to lead Pacific while Matson posted three RBI and one run while going 2-for-5 on the day.

The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, March 21, as they travel to Sacramento State to take on the Hornets in a non-conference double-header. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm.
