San Diego, Calif. - With the help of six goals scored by senior Kellie Fletcher (Roseville, Calif.), the Pacific women's water polo team came back from a 8-6 deficit going into the fourth quarter on Mar. 16 to defeat Colorado State by a score of 10-9 in San Diego, Calif. With the win, the Tigers improved their overall record to 4-16 on the season, while the Rams in turn fell to 5-17 on the year with the loss.
Before coming back to defeat the Rams late in the fourth quarter, the Tigers trailed early in the game as they fell behind Colorado State by a score of 3-2 after the first period. The Tigers were consistent over the initial three periods however, as they would net two goals in each of the first three quarters of the game to go into the half with a 4-3 advantage.
After shutting Colorado State out in the second quarter however, the Rams would not go away as they returned to the pool to score five goals in the third period to retake control of the game. Senior goalkeeper Jocelyn Gray (Strathmore, Alberta, Canada) kept the Colorado State offense at bay though throughout the fourth and final quarter as the Tigers were able to pound the Rams for four late goals to capture their fourth win of the season.
In addition to Fletcher's six goals, three other Tigers scored in the win. Senior Virginia McConnell (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) found the back of the net for the Tigers twice, while freshmen Courtney Boettger (Stockton, Calif.) and Dara Tawarahara (Honolulu, Hawaii) each netted one goal in the victory.
The Tigers will return to Chris Kjeldsen pool in Stockton, Calif. on Mar. 21, when they take on Cal State Northridge at 5:00 p.m. on Senior Day.
