San Francisco, Calif. - A solo home run from junior Kurt Wideman (Fallbrook, Calif.) was not enough for the Pacific baseball team to upend San Francisco as the Tigers fell to the Dons, 9-1, on Wednesday, Mar. 12.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 2-12 on the season, while San Francisco improved to 7-8.
San Francisco put the Tigers on the defensive with eight runs in the first three innings. The Dons scoring started with their first batter as Joey Railey belted a solo home run. The next three San Francisco batters reached and the Dons went on to score three runs on four hits to take a 3-0 lead after one inning.
San Francisco added another run in the second and four more in the third. The Dons four-run third was helped along by a Pacific error that led to three unearned runs.
Trailing 8-0, Wideman blasted his second home run of the season over the center field wall.
Unfortunately that was the only offense the Tigers could muster.
San Francisco added a late run to make the final score, 9-1.
Pacific starter, sophomore Hunter Carnevale (Roseville, Calif.), suffered the loss (1-3) by allowing eight runs (four earned) on eight hits and two hit batters.
San Francisco starter Matt Lujan (1-0) earned the victory by tossing five innings of shutout baseball. Lujan gave up just three hits and did not walk a batter, while striking out five.
Pacific freshman Corey Kohnke (Dana Point, Calif.) tossed five innings of solid relief, allowing only one run on three hits and two walks.
Wideman's 4-for-4 performance highlighted the Tigers' offensive effort. Kurt finished with a home run, two doubles and a single.
The Tigers return home for a weekend series against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The three-game series begins this Friday, Mar. 14 at 6 p.m. at Klein Family Field.
