Oct. 16, 2008

Box Score

Boone, N.C. - Playing with a purpose down the stretch of the 2008 season, the Pacific field hockey team earned its second consecutive and third overall victory, 3-0, over Appalachian State on Thursday, Oct. 16.

The victory lifted Pacific to 3-9 on the season and 2-1 in NorPac Conference play. Appalachian State, meanwhile, fell to 2-11 overall and 1-5 in conference.

As a hotly contested first period dwindled towards its final seconds, the Tigers capitalized on a late opportunity. Junior Katy McDonough (Ventura, Calif.) fielded a pass from senior Erica Nestle (San Jose, Calif.), then fired Pacific's eighth shot of the period. McDonough's blast screamed past Appalachian State's Bridgette Street to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. The goal came with just 31 seconds remaining in the opening period.

The score remained 1-0 until just under 12 minutes remaining, Pacific sophomore Rachel Taylor (Southampton, N.Y.) knifed through the Mountaineers defense then smacked another shot by Street to lift Pacific's lead to 2-0. Freshman Robin Nelson (Morgan Hill, Calif.) tapped in a late goal from sophomore Kelly Perkins (Gilroy, Calif.) as the Tigers put the game away.

Pacific senior Kelly Miller (Monterey, Calif.) recorded her second career shutout in just the second game she saw action this season.

The Tigers finished the contest with a 17-5 edge in shots and a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners.

The Tigers return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 18 as Pacific faces Radford in a neutral site contest in Boone, N.C. at 12:30 p.m. ET
