Berkeley, Calif. - Led by a strong defensive effort and two second-half goals the Pacific field hockey squad defeated Davidson, 4-2, on Sunday, Oct. 12.
The victory lifted the Tigers to 2-9 on the season and 1-1 in the NorPac Conference, while Davidson fell to 3-11 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
Davidson struck first right out of the gate on an unassisted goal by Courtney Tobe, to put the Wildcats up 1-0 in the first half. The battle ensued from this point on with shot after shot being launched from both teams. Junior Katy McDonough (Ventura, Calif.) evened the score at 1-1 with her goal at the 9:05 mark.
Both teams continued to exchange blows until senior Erica Nestle (San Jose, Calif.), who assisted McDonough on the previous goal, put the Tigers ahead 2-1 with her first goal of the game. Not to be outdone, Davidson responded 31:56 into the game, with a goal by Claire Perry. With the score knotted at halftime, Pacific looked to continue its offensive push into the second half.
After halftime, the Tigers were determined to put some distance between themselves and the Wildcats, and came out firing. Pacific outshot Davidson 11-2 in the second half, as well as dominated the penalty corners, 5-1.
Sophomore Kelly Perkins (Gilroy, Calif.) put the Tigers ahead 3-2 with her first goal of the game at the 50:19 mark. As the half began to wind down, McDonough closed the door on the Wildcats with her second goal of the contest on an unassisted shot from the left side at 66:36, to give the Tigers their 4-2 victory.
Pacific was led by McDonough who had two goals and one assist in the game, followed by Nestle who had one goal and one assist for the Tigers.
Davidson was led by Tobe and Perry who had one goal apiece for the Wildcats.
The Tigers next head to North Carolina for three consecutive NorPac Conference games, starting with a game against Appalachian State on Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. (ET).
