Sept. 30, 2007

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific field hockey team fell short 2-1 to Stanford in a Sunday afternoon contest at Brookside Field on Sept. 30.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 1-8 on the season, while Stanford moved to 7-2 overall.

The first goal came from Stanford's Camille Gandhi as she fired her shot in at the 6:12 minute mark on an assist from Katherine Swank.

Pacific answered back midway through the first period as Tiger senior Katie Fixsen (Vista, Calif.) fired a shot at Stanford goalie Madison Bell. Bell deflected Fixsen's shot, but Pacific leader corraled the ball and sent another assault towards Bell. This time Fixsen's effort found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1 with 13:07 remaining in the half.

Despite a defensive struggle in the second period, Stanford captured the lead as senior Jess Zutz fielded a left-to-right crossing pass from Xanthe Travlos, then crossed the ball back to the left past pacific goalkeeper freshman Lauren Woods (Oceanside, Calif.) at the 51:27 mark.

The Tigers best chance to tie the game came late in the second period as senior Melody Demel (Fallbrook, Calif.) scalded a ball from outside the circle off a defender and into the Stanford goal. Unfortunately for the Tigers, field hockey only allows a goal if an offensive player touches the ball from inside the shooting circle. As a result, Demel's shot resulted in a Pacific possession from the outside.

Stanford and Pacific each finished with five penalty corners, while each side had nine shots a piece at the end of the play.

Pacific will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 4 as the Tigers begin a three-game with a neutral site NorPac contest against Radford at 6 p.m. (ET) in Farmville, Vir.
